I went to the track yesterday looking for 8's, but ended up with a ride to the hospital :(

Let me start off by saying that anyone who has lowered their bike please invest in a modified oil pan. DO IT! I have made quite a few passes and have wheelied the bike countless times and have never touched the oil pan down so I figured why get one? Well this is why.

I only got to make a few passes yesterday before my shifter started acting up. The bike would either mis-shift or it would shift and then half way through the gear it would pop out. Im not sure if I have a problem in the tranny or if there is something going on with the shifter. I had been making some 9.0 passes and really wanted that 8.99 so I kept riding it. My best pass looked like this

1.453
3.826
5.824 @ 123.288mph
7.556

9.047 @ 151.696mph

I had also pulled a few 1.40 and 1.41 60's but on all of those passes the bike either mis-shifted or popped out of gear. So I knew that if I could just get one clean pass with a good 60 I would have my slip.

Well on my last pass I got off real hard and the front started to come up, no big deal I thought, so I click for 2nd gear and the bike mis-shifts and the front end slammed down. I then the rest is a bit blurry. I just remember the tail fishtailing for a few hundred yards. I wasnt sure what was going on, I first thought that I had gotten a flat tire or the tire had come off the wheel or something. But I had cracked the oil pan open and all of my oil was draining out onto the rear tire. The fishtailing just became more and more violent until it threw me off the bike. I was told that the bike just lowsided and spun to a halt. I had hit the back of my head so hard that it cracked the helmet open. After the crash I dont remember much, I think I blacked out for a minute or two. When I came to the paramedic was telling me to just lay there. I ended up getting up with the help of someone, who I dont know. My friends loaded my bike and took me to the hospital. I was wearing a one piece suite, so no rash just a concusion. Im a bit out of it and sore today, but everything is ok. I will live to race again The bike looks suprisingly well, just some scuffed plastics and bars and pegs.

So no 8's again lol.

Here are some pics of the day.

First off, man I'm glad you're ok!

I can't see the pics at work...but did you have the forks slid up in the triples? If so, how far? I am leery about doing that on mine since it seems as though the bike will bottom well before the forks run out of travel.

Anyway, I'm just asking because I am lowering my forks now...and had thought of fine tuning the ride height by sliding them up a bit. But now I'm having second thoughts on that.

If you recall...how high did the bike come up??

Shane

I had been running the forks 1" up, but the night before the track day I slid them up another .25" so I had them at 1.25". I also had the bike strapped. The front fairing was pretty much on the fender. I had ran this way before with no problems, but if you cut the throtle or have the bike pop out of gear up there, you can imagine the force put on the front of the bike when it comes down. I really have no idea how high it got.

Here is a vid of another run. Yeah not a good one. As you can hear I missed a shift

I have seen this happen several times at the track, I cracked mine unloading it off the trrailer. I had my pan cut and had the drain plug put on the side and never had any more problems. Its for sale if ya want it. I went with a pan that holds more oil now. Its good to see your ok, Like i said ive seen it b4 and you wouldnt think it would hurt that bad. But it slams down so fast and hard most people have to go to the hospital right then. Its def a safety concern. Let me know what you need for the bike, and if i have extras ill just give em to ya.

I've strapped mine down about two fingers off the fender, without sliding the forks. I've also landed some wheelies (about 9 o' clock only), with no troubles.

How far are you lowered down in the rear?

Glad you are ok .... A friend of ours ( Tommy ) came down hard off a big wheely on his zx14 last weds night ... He didn't wreck but he did crack the oil pan ....

I have slammed mine down hard a bunch of times and no problems so far but my oil pan drain bolt is about half way ground off ..I would say for most guys just moving the drain plug to the side would take care of any problems .. I'm not a fan of cut pans because it holds less oil than factory.. All the cracked or busted pans i have seen the drain plug hanging down was the problem..

Just so every1 knows the cut pans work well in the drag-race applications. U lose very little oil capacity with the amount cut off. I always fill my sight glass full though. I dont know if id use it for some extended speed contest such as a mile or more. The only reason i wont be using mine anymore is i bought a sidewinder exhaust, and a flatter oil pan. Im going to lower the bike to the max. Just my 2 cents.

Glad to see your alright man. When you take the pan off check the pickup real good or better yet replace it. I have seen them crack slightly after a hit like this and no one caught it. The motor starves for oil in hard use or another wheel stand any thing that gets the oil level below the crack. The pump loses psi and the top end gets really noisey'' and its all bad after that! Ask me how i know this LOL. Now would be a good time to mod your pan...........Bill

As usual Bill is giving solid advise. Check out the plastic pickup as it is literally pushed into place by the bottom of the oilpan. Hopefully your bike did kill by tipover sensor when it fell. I have read where they dont work all the time. Be sure to change the oil pan gasket and not reuse the old one too.

Glad your alright, second, glad the bike isn't hurt too bad. I've been afraid of that too. I've already tore most of the shield in front of the plug off by hitting it... Pretty ignorant of me to not get it fixed.

That plug sits low, I whacked the guard off of mine going into the trailer. I cleaned it up with a dremel, but it is getting moved before the bike goes back together...

Thanks for the replies guys. I just went out and took a better look at the pan, and it looks like the drain plug and some of the pan around it is completely gone. Even some of the protecting lip is still there. It didnt touch the header so that is good news, just some fairing damage and little parts. I cant believe that the swingarm is even fine. It just slid on the axle bolt.

Good to hear your OK!!!!
I had the same thing happen to me but made it to the end of the track. Started to try and slow down rear brake felt real funny, When I stoped to pick up my slip they pointed out the oil flowing out. I though I blew the motor, but I was glad to find out it was just the oil pan. I was very lucky i didn't go down!!!! I won that round but wasn't able to contiune.
I hit it at the 60'
