Sponges in fairings

You know the ones......there's 3 of them and they're dark grey. One of them fits across the engine coolent resivour.

What are these sponges supposed to do and has anyone just removed them permanently?

i think they are there to keep hot temperature from the radiator to get to your leg.i remove them one time and i notice that on the right side of the bike.

Yes, I removed them.

I have removed all foam and rubber vibration and sound damping pads.

I use my bike primarily for racing, and all of those parts just add weight (for me).

Huh- I thought they would just be for vibes. Interesting that they seem to affect heat radiating from the bike.

I took them off because I went for a ride with my lowers off and I didn't want to take a chance on having them blow out. I thought they might trap moisture after a wet ride or maybe even a wash. I've noticed no rust trails by them at all (I did notice a rust trail from the under seat padding). Think I'll put 'em back for now.

Thanks all. ----------Rook

I hit a dear last april, destroyed most of my plastics the dealer ship forgot to order any of the padding for inside of right fairing I needed bike back together so I went until last month without reinstalling inner padding and did not notice much of a difference.

NEW QUESTION:

When removing the sponges, it seemed like the one on the engine(right) and the one on the coolent resivour(left) were stuck in place by some sort of mild adhesive. When I reinstall the sponges, should I use some kind of adhesive to prevent them from blowing out, or will they just stick by themself from the pressure of the fairings?

I stuck mine back on using black RTV sealant. Seemed to work OK and I know if I want to remove they should just peel back off.

Thanks, ratbyk. I remember someone posting that they used some kind of adhesive. Must have been you. I don't think I'm familiar with the stuff. What kind of store/department would carry that and if I ask for "RTV sealent," will they know it by that name? Or is there some brandname that RTV is commonly reffered to by?

Any of your local hardware stores will have it... Lowes, home depot.. Parts stores. Autozone, advance auto, napa, carquest... If you can't find it at one of them, you might not need it!

My new 08 SE lowers grills don't have any of the pads and
it all seemed the same. I did ride in the cold months of the fall
though, so that might be why I didn't notice any difference with engine
heat and such. Didn't notice any noices or bad vibes from the fairings
either.
