WHERE TO MOUNT PCIII

where are you guys mounting your pc, id like to see a spot a little bit easier to get to than what the directions say.got it hooked up and running, but before i mount it i will wait on some pics! it was a little hard to start and the idle dosent wants to act a little weird... idels a lot lower than before, like around 800 rpm. i have no experience tuning one of these, so advice would be greatly appreciated! i downloaded the proper map (boz bros exhaust), so i didnt think there was anything else to do.

One the ram air tube aint that hard to deal with and dry.
Was considering mounting mine under the seat, but like the dryness of the tube. I live in Western Wa. state so its a important issue for me.
Also if you dyno tune its nicer for the tuner to be able to sit!
I used alot of 3M doubleback tape & then 2 zip ties wrapped around so the buttons were available.

The factory mounting position under the left fairing panel works but the ground tab under the coolant bottle is so lame. I mounted mine under the seat as several have done here and seems to be a better spot. I cut an soldered a longer ground that goes to the battery. It's a bitch getting the plugs through the frame but worth it IMO.

i mounted it behind the coolent bottle, but i added a washer in between the coolant bottle and the wire. maybe it will give it a better connection. i put locktite on the bolt so it wont loosen up and lose connection. i think i am going to end up moving it, but it has to go to the shop tomorrow morn to get air shifter hooked up, so i dont have a lot of time.

The ram air duct was the perfect spot for me...easy to install and easy to get to. I mounted my ground on the coolant bottle with a lockwasher. The ground there is fine....its the fact the soft plastic bottle allows a less than tight/flush contact for the ground thats the prob. A nice lockwasher between the bottle and ground keeps the ground tight against the motor, and keeps it from loosening up. Mines been great for a couple years now

Left ram air tube for me. I like to setup the laptop on a tv tray beside the bike and tune away. BTW mine will briefly idle real low like 800 rpm too right after the fast idle circuit then finally level off at 1100 rpm.

I had mine on the ram air tube, but I found it to be more convenient under the seat. Plus you can ground to the battery without extending the negative terminal.

On the left intake tube was the easiest, with good access for tuning with laptop on stool. Noticed some movement later on & padded with 1/2 " foam to protect pc.

Surprised no one mentioned calibrating the throttle to the PCIII yet. You need to hook up a 9 volt battery to the adapter that comes with the PCIII (so that it stays powered after you turn it off) and then calibrate your throttle to the PCIII so that it knows EXACTLY what voltage is sent when you are at idle at WOT- otherwise it can vary greatly and your Power Commander will add fuel at the wrong time!

Not sure of the exact steps since its been awhile, but here's the jist of it:

First and MOST IMPORTANT STEP! Warm the bike completely- dont stop until the fan comes on. Best and my preferred method is to go for a ride so that the entire bike is warmed up including any expansion that might take place in the cables etc...

next while bike is running hook up the 9 volt alternate power source for the PCIII, hook up your laptop, and turn bike off with the kill switch (NOT the key). I forgot which function you hit on the laptop program to start the throttle calibration but it, of course, isn't called 'Throttle Calibration'.

Then you have to save to its memory the idle voltage and then wing the throttle wide open and save that voltage too. ~First time I did it myself I had the idle speed too high (1200rpm) and AFTER I calibrated it to the PCIII I lowered the idle to below what the PCIII recognized (1000rpm)- it ran like shit and didn't start easy until I recalibrated it. ~

Then you're done. Some guys do that simple but important procedure very often, some 'set it and forget it' which is up to you. Just make sure you redo it if you ever load another map!

Edit: If you use the very convenient ground located by the water bottle on the bar that attaches to the frame and engine, be warned: It has a crappy connection to the frame. They used sealant in the bolt holes and mine also had powdercoating in the holes. Great for corrosion resistance, crappy for electrical connection. I used a gun barrel brass bore brush to clean the holes and wire brushed the bolt, and even blended the mating surfaces to ensure a good pathway. There has been quite a bit of members who have had issues with the PCIII not being grounded properly and running like shit, especially on the top end.

Best to always run it straight to the battery, which I would have done but I was in a hurry and the auto parts stores were closed. Patience is not a virtue I possess I'm afraid.
