Bill,
Excellent video - I noticed there was no salt on the tires and black marks on the salt - I understand the salt was much better this year than last - How was your traction...

Kevin, great to hear from you and I loved your video. I made a comment at the end but someone or somehow it got erased. Yes the salt was perfect this year and the lines much shorter. It was three times as much fun as last year. Too bad you couldn't make it out. Coming out in 2009? And do you still have your 14?

Thanks guys for your kind comments.

Gyroscopic effect-

I've been asked a number of times about crashing at high speeds and did it worry me. As I explained in "Bonneville 2006", I was scared to death before my first time at Bonneville until I spoke with an Engineer who explained to me that the stock motorcycle was quite safe due to "gyroscopic effect". As young kids we learned to put string around the axis of a toy gyroscope and then pull it. As the the cyclinder turned quickly we could then balance the toy on the end of a pencil or your finger. The engineer went on to explain that on your motorycle you have three gyroscopes. Your front wheel, rear wheel and your chain. Therefore the faster you went, the less chance you would have of going down.

I found this short video on Youtube of a man bailing off his bike at Bonneville at a high rate of speed. As you watch it observe what his bike is doing with him at the controls and then notice what happens to the directional stability of the bike when he falls off. It's very fascinating. That is why we use kill switches tied to our wrists. If we didn't kill the engine when falling off, the bike would continue forever until the gas ran out, it hit something or it slowed down enough to eliminate gyroscopic effect.

Bottom line- Going fast at a racing venue (and not on a street or highway) is very safe on a stock framed bike. If you start "to lose it" just let go" until stability returns.... but stay on the bike.

Bill,
Sounds like it was a great year - still have the 14 - it is ready to roll - although I need to do a little tuning refinement - did not run it much this year - I was playing at the drag strip on the VRod - running in the points. Therefore missed all the LSR stuff. I am a bit doubtfu on returning to Bonneville - at least in the short term - I am getting gun shy on the Land Speed stuff - the ride at Bonneville was just too much on the edge... and with the multiple serious accidents this year - I am thinking it might be good to quit while I am ahead. It sounds like 08 was a great time to run - I am impressed with you 199.xxx. As a reminder - how did your numbers compare with you 06 Modified runs as compared to your MPS runs - I am assuming they were both identical setups with the exception of the body work.
