Fast idle
I was just watching a video of a ZX14 being started from cold and it fast idled at 1500 rpm. My bike doesnt do this i need to get on it and go or give it a little bit of revs for 30 seconds or so before it will idle.
Does anyone know what would cause this?
thanks

strange..... mine idles high (1500ish) till it's warmed up and then settles down to 900ish. Then as it gets warmer it idles at around 1000-1100.

The ECU is in control of that. It should idle up and then come down to whatever you have it set at (1100 warm)

There should be a fast idle cam and solenoid controled by ECU. Needs adj. Take it back to Dealer for adj.

Is this something I can do myself? Im pretty handy with spanners as I'm a mechanic (albeit not a motorcycle mechanic) and I have the Kawasaki service manual but I cant see anything about it.
Thanks

Why risk breaking something and then having the shop blame you - even if it was ALREADY broken.
I would take it in.....if I were you - b/c I'll take anything apart :-)

I just moved into a new house and can not find the stink’in manual. But I do have an extra set of throttle bodies so I took a look as I am stink’in bored of unpacking
You need to lift the tank from the front, do not remove!! ...some disassembly required.
Look on the left side of the bike just behind where the idle cable (low speed) attaches to the throttle cable spool. You should see a threaded adjuster that is tied in with secondary flies control rod and a dog off the main throttle spool that it hits. It should not touch the dog until you turn on ignition.
TURN ON IGNITION AND BLIP THROTTLE AND WATCH ADJUSTER, DO NOT START YET. Did the adjuster push the spool forward?? Now try starting.. LOOk AGAIN. If it did not, you have a problem with the secondary flies actuation motor or the ECU. or one of the sensors feeding the ECU.
If it did but not very much, you can adjust the treaded adjuster so it pushes the throttle spool forward more raising the cold rpm.
OR if all this sounds daunting....take it in

Do i leave the tank facing forwards just raise it enough to see in?
So is the solenoid that controls the secondary flies responsible for controlling the fast idle too then?
Sorry for all the questions!

Again..can not find manual, hate moving.
But.. yes it does seem that way. Many guys before removing the flies reported that low end torque increased for a very short time during warm up. I too felt that before taking mine out.
The setup on the throttle bodies looks that flies open fully during warm up and set high idle in doing so.
It you remove front and rear tank brackets you can lift up the front of the tank pretty far. You do not have to disconnect any lines. Be carfull there might be a electrical connect to undo. (for fuel level) Use a cut piece of 2x4 to hold tank up, I hung mine from the ceiling with a hook and tie down..
At that point you can see all the links under the side cover where the tank meets it.
Hope that helps

The good news is that it is not a vital part. Get some heat in the motor and normal idle will take it from there. It will only take seconds........which is probably better than buying any parts.

Does that mean that with the flies removed you lose the fast idle?

He is correct.
Removing flies, you only remove the plates off the control rod. leaving the rest of the system in place. Bike's ECU does not sence they are missing, You DO need a PC3 for fuel "jetting" though.

the power commander lcd shows me the bike is getting two percent throttle input from the computer during the warmup sequence. once the bike gets to temperature the throttle percentage returns to zero percent.

I cracked it! It all becomes clear once you see it. I thought you meant the secondary butterflies controlled the fast idle but I now see that its just the spindle which acts on the linkage. I adjusted the linkage and hey presto its fixed! I only needed to remove the grills and i could see it perfectly.
Thanks for all your help guys
