Air Shifter vs foot shifting?

In the 1/4 whats the difference in et and mph between the two? I'm in an argument with a dude and he said a good foot shifter is just as fast...I'm claiming BS and said 1-2 tenths and 3-4 mph. What say fellows

I think it really depends on how bad you are at foot-shifting. I am really slow, so I did see 1-2 tenths and 3-4 mph. Plus, I had issues hitting 2-3 reliably, so I now have fewer botched passes.

A good foot shifting rider is just as fast as a air shifter as long as the gearing isn't to quick for the 1-2 shift to be made, I've already proved this out with 2 zx14's setup the same, mine with no air shifter and Brocked out, the other with a air shifter and Muzzy M14, with the same 150 lb rider, my bike was actually .15 and 2 mph faster than the air shifted bike, he had 1.50 60's on both bikes and put down a 9.22 on mine foot shifting to 9.37 air shifting, he then foot shifted the other bike and went 9.38.

Ive always wondered the same question. I guess the only way you will find out how much you are or arent loosing would be to either get a air shifter and make back to back passes with and without it, or ride a friends bike that has one. Since I dont know anyone with an airshifted bike I guess I will have to get one some day boo ha

I should add one significant consideration:

If you are a larger guy, like me, when you move to make the 1-2 shift it can cause the bike to wheelie. I watched video of myself on several different bikes (10, 12, 14), and every time I lifted up for the shift, the front wheel started to lift.

It happens because you have to sit up a little to get that leg up, and it raises the center of gravity of the bike. Now I don't have to get my feet up until after the 1-2 shift, and no more wheelie issue.

It takes quite a bit of time to become real good at footshifting...Here are the reasons why...

You need to have a different body position for the shift, which means also for the launch...

Thats why it takes so long to get use to, especially if you 60' harder and harder and on different bikes...

A custom seat or fiberglass seat holding you in place is a big plus...

Must shift without the clutch, blip the throttle along with pulling up the shifter all at the same time as fast as possible!!!...2 reasons why one would miss shift during this process...Not pulling up the shifter hard enough, dont be easy on it, pull the shifter up as if your trying to break it...Not letting out the throttle enough to unload the trans...

If you want to get nitrous or have, airshifter is a must, make life alot easier!!!

i was just abou to add that as well.......no clutch! just barely twitch the throttle while keeping pressure up on the shift lever, practice makes perfect...... now the 1-2 shift for me with 16-43 gearing is tough.... if i can get my leg up fast enough to make it the rest is a piece of cake

I would say air.If you watch the pros they wont pick their feet up til after they shift into 2nd as not to upset the bike. With foot shifting that cant be done.

I had problems with the 2-3 shift when preloading the shifter. Sometimes it wouldn't go in. I think it could be from the trans being new (1400 miles on the bike). I didn't have any problem shifting the 10 or 12 that way.

When I was foot shifting I found the numbers to be very close, no more than a tenth.
I used to always have problems with my airshifters on bikes so I gave up on them for about a year. Got it dialed in on the ZX14 my 2nd year of owning it. I notice that I slide the clutch longer when footshifting though and as a result go through more clutches.

Air shifter only improved me 4 hundreths and no change in mph. Getting under the shifter in time for 2nd gear shift was getting real hard to do by the fifth pass, tired my legs out.

Maybe as good, never better, but most are not as good as they think.
Big MAYBE.

Swiftkart get you buddy to make passes on the same bike. some with the shifter some without. Some bikes run stronger than others which would screw your test.

When I was at stock wheelbase my best et footshifting was 5.93 @123 1/8 , and w/ airshifter my best et was 5.93 @ 124, not much improvement really. When I footshift the bike sounds the same as with an airshifter, it even "pops" the same. Just practice and make sure you have a good steering damper (GPR) because you will upset the front end some when you go banging those gears quickly.

Shane is right. I lose a lot of time while picking my feet up. Just recently, however, after watching vids of Rickey Gadson and others I noticed that they kept their feet even with the pegs. I had been laying out and bringing my feet up from WAY back. I'm changing my 16t back to the stock 17t so as not to be SO wheelie prone. The main advantage I can see of the airshifter is to be able to shift early in 1st if the front is coming up fast. Below is a vid of a good buddy of mine. It's a perfect example of what can be done with an airshifter that most likely wouldn't be done with the foot. He rides out about a 400ft wheelie and still runs a 9.1.

He did, if you read the last line of my post, he went 9.37 air shifter on my friends 14 and 9.38 foot shifting the same bike, my bike doesn't have a air shifter, well not yet anyway.

Sometimes it doesnt help!! It all depends on how good you are shifting!! If you look at this video you can see that I put my feet right away on the pegs so i can have enough time to get ready to shift.

I LIKE that video Madness! Actually, after watching it several times, I notice you pick up your feet BEFORE you leave. Interesting. I'm usually pushing forward with my feet keeping the bike from moving forward right before I leave. Aahhh...always something new and interesting to try.

I had the quick shifter and it worked well but you still need to get you feet up. After having the airshifter I would never buy the quick shifter again!

Looks like you need to update your sig Bently, way to go!

As soon as I can I will be getting the muzzy nitrous shifter combo. I think by being able to leave your feet down past the 1-2 shift will make for faster 60-330' times. I know that pulling my feet up for the 1-2 always disrupts my bike and slows me down.
