xmas turbo
I'm very close to having Santa deliver a turbo for Christmas. I've done as much research as possible to make an informed decision but still have a few things I would like feedback to sort out.
1 - I have only seen one manufacturer use gravity oil return, the others use a pump. Obviously pump failure would be damaging, but is there benefit that I am unaware of?
2 - I see varying opinions on fuel pumps - is an upgrade necessary if I only plan to run stock motor internals at minimm boost (approx 7psi)? Likewise with fuel rails/injectors?
3 - I'm not confident I can get a decent map done in my area - lot's of high quality car techs, but not many for bikes. Would a "self-mapping" product like Bazzaz puts out work with a turbo application?
The entire purpose is to move me down the 1/4 faster. At 240 on a light day, I'm simply not seeing the numbers the smaller/lighter members are posting (best so far is high 9.6 sec pass). I've looked at Nitrous, and while I'm sure recent developments have made it's use safer and more reliable, the potential for engine melt-down is enough for me to rule it out (shame since it would be immensely cheaper!)
Final comment - the recent adjustments to the US economy have made purchasing difficult (about 0.25 on the $) - anyone have any ideas on how I can source parts and get them into Canada without the significant currency exchange?
Thanks

several turbos around here.....sevearl 10's.....a cbxx & a busa or 2
oil will be a primary concern...................if you aint on a synthethic
pick one & stick to it
i hope you are going to get a ball bearing turbo..........................really
sounds like you have been doin your home work...................... but really
check out the ball bearing turbo
oil into the the turbo is crucial even tho it doesnt use that much
some have mounted coolers in front of radiators to be certain the supply is cool
there are soooooooooo many coolers from sooooo many bikes they are easy to find & SIZE
easy addition................................simply another level of peace o mind
remember with a turbo the boost shown is above the atmospheric [1 bar]
so you are in reality pumpin in approx 22psi
a 9.6 pass is not shabby at all
im not advocating nitrous........................really depends on set up
check your temp tables
the more you can cool the intake charge.........the more HP
more reliable HP can be obtained from lowering temps ..............than
from pushing up boost
youve already been studying.........................check this out & you will see
now there is aguy in europe............no i dont know him
he dry/fogs with nitrous........in actuality to Cool the incoming charge
nothing does it better
he run it both ways & can see a clear gain
that canalso be accomplished by alcohol water injection
basically same results....................................so No its not about the engine
eating nitrous
either way cooling is the objective...............nitous less messy than alky/water
just my 2 cents
good luck

just looking for a better 1/4. nitrous is a much better bang for the buck. you don't even have a guy to map the turbo yet. turbo setup at the track can be a hard thing to nail down. i would get the muzzy air shifter nitrous combo. a turbo would be trick tho if you got the bucks!

i've been down both roads
NOS cost me no motor with 100lbs of fogging and 31k miles 189hp motor and spray 220 hp
But turbo cost me a motor with-in a 100 mile ride 235hp on 4lbs of boost
i'm 275hp now with 7lbs of boost spikes to 9lbs to open waste gate
but if i could do over i would have left the turbo alone at the store cause its been just as much a pain in the ass as filling bottles ...

Running a Muzzy turbo stage one. Just passed 15,000 miles without a problem on the turbo, 25,000 total miles. It does have an oil pump return, and the air cleaner hangs out the lower right side. The air cleaner is far better that the tiny stock POS. Running a stock wheel base with a 175 lb rider 200 with gear. Cannot launch on full boost, wants to burn or wheelie. With a terrible 1/8 mile of trying to get the power to the ground after the 1/8 wants to Rock And Roll. High 6's in the 1/8 at 108 then finishes with a low 10 avg 146 mph.
If you do the math it covers the rest of the 1/4 in 3.2 seconds with the front wheel becoming very light and the rear tire breaking loose often in 3rd and 4th gear. High speed fishtails are a bitch. You need an extended arm for a decent 1/4 mile, strapped and lowered. Sport touring tires will not bite well. 99.9% of the riding is open highway so the stock arm is needed for dodging truck tires and other road crap. One other thing mapping is everything it needs to be done by someone professional. Salt Lake Motorsports did my map and the plugs after 22,000 miles looked like they only had 500.

I've owned three turbo busas and you need to remember three things...1-BUY A QUALITY SYSTEM
2-IF YOU CAN'T INSTALL IT WITH EASE HAVE A PROFFESIONAL DO IT.
3-HAVE IT TUNED BY SOME ONE WHO UNDERSTANDS TURBOS IT WILL SAVE YOUR ENGINE.
now go do it and have fun, I've gotten used to boost now and EVERYTHING feels so slow.

That is great mph for a stock bike...nitrous is great stuff but it can never compete with a well set up and tuned turbo. The big problems with turbos are COST.

Brock's is not currently working on a turbo. They did have some testing on a turbo kit that was provided to them, but the results were not acceptable and the testing is not continuing - no immediate plans are in place for the forseeable future.
Thanks for the comments. I have researched nitrous, and race against peers who are spraying, but just don't feel comfortable with it - besides I have a small penis and need to compensate with a large turbo! Seriously though, any further feedback will be greatly appreciated as the knowledge I have now is strictly academic - those of you who have actually installed and run turbos are the people I am looking towards for real world information.
Thanks again.

I thought I was crazy but you do get used to boost and how to keep the animal on a leash. Rode an M109 and a R-6, totally underwhelmed.
