Exploded Clutch Basket

well i think this is a new one, anyone seen this before on a 14? went to San Antonio and made a few passes Friday night to prepare for Saturdays races. This was the result on run #5











4 frictions were gone

i would take any ideas as to what happened as well as suggestions on replacement ideas

This usually happens when the clutch is disengaged at extremely high revs and the part/parts disintegrate from centrifugal force. As long as the clutch is fully engaged the pressure springs hold everything together. Pull in the lever when the revs are in the strato-spher and ka-boom!
Lucky it only took out the clutch cover and not the crankcase!! Now you can buy one of those HD clutch covers. as well as a new clutch. Drag racing is abusive on equipment.

Send your gear assembly to Falicon and have them attach it to a billet basket.

Anything can happen when you put these kinds of stresses on the drivetrain. Perhaps the original unit had a casting flaw...or maybe it's time just came.

I have not heard of this being a common problem on the 14. It will be interesting to see what you find in the oilpan.

anyone else running a billet basket? probably 500-600 runs on the bike cant complain too much, but i think several of you also have those kind of numbers or more also. It had to be my fault i had just mentioned before that pass how bullet proof these clutches are.

here is the story, first 2 passes were normal, next 2 something didnt feel right during the launch, it was fine in the pits normal feel and take off but at the line it grabbed and bogged the motor. I wasn't sure if it was me ( hands were very cold ) or the bike, so i had to make another to be sure, However pass 5 started perfect, no sudden grab, felt smooth and just as the clutch was fully released , throttel was pinned and BOOM
I cant help but think maybe i had damaged a fiber first?

I have seen one other zx14 do that ( not near as bad as yours ).. It's something that doesn't happen offten but when it does it sucks ..Get a billet basket and make sure to pull the pan and get the rest of that crap out of there ...

I had one on a GS1000 come apart and took out the hole motor and left me with a nice little scar on my leg...

I got 2 extra clutch baskets. If you need 1, let me know, Ill sell ya 1 cheap, or trade ya something.

Go billet or expect it to happen again. For that basket to go like that, it has been cracked for a while. Smokin broke one on his ZRX and I broke 2 on my ZRX before I installed a billet basket. Pull the pan off that motor and check EVERYWHERE. You will find all sort of pieces hiding.

How many times have you missed shifted???

When you use to foot shift did you use the clutch after 1st. gear???

No Malfunction

missed once in while when i was footshifting last year

the first couple of times i raced i did use the clutch (bone stock), didnt know any better. That was several hundred runs ago so not sure if that could have caused previous damage

How many times did you have to forcibly remove warped steels???

The steels must have been so warped that it caused the basket to blow!!!

was only 2nd clutch, steels never warped, original steels slid right off so did these, u can see in the pic they dont look bad and are not warped at all

Doesn't matter what plates or springs you run. Once the webbing between the basket fingers starts to crack it's only a matter of time before it blows. The clutch basket takes an enormous amout of TQ to lauch the bike. Stock baskets are just not made to take that kind of abuse continuous. Go billet and nerver have to worry about it again. Oh and I'm serious about pulling the bottom off that motor.

going to drop pan tonight and try to get it all cleaned up.
Any tips or trick on how to get the Basket off with out a impact?

it aint like a billet wont let go

& if it does it will throw bigger chunks at you

the imperative question is how long since last clutch rehab

how long since plates ...... steels or friction were replaced

a reasonable estimate of how many passes are made

you can SEE the clutch basket getting beat up........

you can also feel it by running your fingers across the tabs

on removing the big nut ...................................use a breaker bar & keep it 90degrees
sometimes it gets off angle & can cause further problems

it is improper to use an impact......................sure it gets the job done

except it knackers the threads .........................resulting in a less likely

situation that your torque of the reapplied big nut will be correct

that applies to ANY fastener !!!!!!!!

if you want it to be right ..........

or stay right

Well thats what i am using, need to stop the engine from turning over, Tried brake/ maybe i need a helper to hold it, i only tried for a second it was getting late

Johnny, just looks like it was time to go, those stells look to be in good shape.
Billet basket, OEM clutch plates, and get an assortment of steel thicknesses
so you can get the stack height just right.
