Spitting Out Valve Shims??

I read a while back about some 14's spitting out the valve shims when the cams were changed. Is there something that makes the 14 more susceptible to this problem than other bikes?

I would assume that when replacing the cams the springs are also being upgraded. So, I'm just curious as to why it would have this problem. Has anyone actually seen it happen...or is it just a rumor??

Shane

That is usually the mechanics fault. If you install aftermarket cams ( degreed ) and springs, adjust the valves, install the tensioner correctly and torque to spec. it should never spit a shim.

I've had it happen more than once from the bang when you shift on nitrous.

If you lose oil pressure that stock tensioner can go flat!
that stock one has been known to fail.

Bob Carpenter told me the issue with the 14 spitting buckets is also due to steep ramps on aftermarket cams, cam walk, and narrower buckets on the 14.

Bill Eason was selling a few modified zx12 adjusters that will eliminate the issues due to the poor design of the stock tensioner, for those who don't want a manual one.

I believe that the stock cam chain tensioner uses a ratchet mechanism that keeps it in
place when there is no oil pressure and allows it to self adjust when the chain stretches
and oil pressure is applied.

You are 100% correct , that is how it works .... I have not seen or heard of one going bad on a stock motor... It may be a problem on a big motor with cams but not stock ..... Stock motor with spray it's fine , turbos seem to work fine with it also ..

Let me add this ... my 06 had the cam chain rattle on start up when new but after 2000 miles it has never done it again ...My guess the chain got a bit longer and the ratchet mechanism moved to the next notch ..

Now my 09 has never done it , so i'm thinking but can't prove that they may have updated it .. I can't see replacing it with an aftermark unit when there is no need .. Plus most people that have not used one before may not beable to set it right and cause more damage.. They need to be checked offten , if left unchecked you will cause damage ...

On a zx14 ? I have hit the rev limiter many times on spray and no shims popped out ..Nobody i know has lost one either on a zx14... Not saying it can't happen , knock on wood it hasn't happen to me yet ..

I install the ZX12 tensioner's with .120" removed from the face or the APE manual tensioner in all my motor builds, depending on what the client wants. They both work perfectly. ZX12 ratcheting mechanism does not rely on oil pressure to keep chain tight, no backlash issues either. Also makes that annoying startup rattle go away as well. The manual tensioner is great but I have seen a lot of people run them too tight.
