My M4 slip ons are too loud !
I bought a '06 last week with flies removed, PC111 and M4 slip-ons among a long list of things done to it. I love the sound but the cops in the Tacoma area where I work are very tough. My daily driver is a lowered '88 CRX with 225hp and I get pulled over about every 4 months for no reason. The last time was at night and the cop said "I couldn't read your license plate", and it had a light on it.
The original owner of the bike got 2 speeding tickets with it and I think the loud pipes didn't help. The point is, there is no way I am going to get away with that muffler.
The guy gave me the stock mufflers but they weight a ton. Is there a lightweight muffler for these bikes that don't make a lot of noise?

Check out Scorpions. Titanium can, great tone, but not too loud.

You can order a quiet core for the Muzzy. $30-40?? easy to put in. I went that route... but took it back out. Loud pipes save lives. It's all about knowing when and where. I wear earplugs and it's more comfortable. I go slower the louder the pipe. When I had stock exhaust, I ripped! You can't hear it above 40 mph...just the wind.

Hmmm, do they make that as an option for the M10 meg too???? I always wear earplugs and enjoy the tone but for longer trips that would be a nice alternative.

You should consider wearing them then or you might regret it when your hearing is permanently damaged.
Any time you hear a hissing or ringing in the ears after exposure to a loud noise you have done some damage. It adds up over time and is not recoverable.
I buy a large bag of disposable ear plugs, really cheap to buy in bulk, when a pair get dirty just throw them away. A big bag lasts a whole year. If you can afford it you can get moulded ones custom made for you which are even better. Don't take risks with your hearing.

It's not only the loud noises or exhaust tones that impact your hearing. Even regular exposure to heavy wind turbulence and buffeting cause cause hearing loss over the course of time. Every motorcyclist should wear ear protection, especially if the travel at triple digits speeds regularly.

Funny you should mention them...I recently took a VERY long ride with some folks and we had a girl with a 2008 14 with the slip on M4's. Every time we would go to pull out of the gas station we would just look at her when she started her bike up. To be honest, if the M4's offered the same results as my full Muzzy would highly consider them cuz I love their exhaust note.

For Slip-Ons, the 18" mufflers with 2.0" core, 2.0" exit tips have a deep, low frequency tone.

why waste money on slip ons when you can buy a full for cheaper? Running slipons is like dating a hot transvestite... Sure she's cheap and she may look good, but you don't get anything out of it.

Yes, the M4's do sound good on the 14. Also the original owner had the PClll mapped on a dyno with M4's. Unfortunately due to past tickets I can't have any more encounters with the law for about 10 months.
On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being loudest, how would you rank the M4's in relation to other 14 aftermarket exhausts?

I was wondering what the performance difference between the 4-1-2 and 4-1 was. My thought was most of the increase in HP in the tests I have seen were due to the restrictive stock mufflers and the addition of the PClll when the aftermarket mufflers were tested. I only started looking into ZX-14 two weeks ago. Do you know of any tests where they compare the stock header with aftermarket mufflers to a aftermarket header?

The header is where the majority of the gains are made. You might gain 3-4 hp with a set of slip ons, whereas you can gain 10 with a full. Plus the weight savings is still quite a bit over the stock headers.

+1
For 2006-2007 bikes, most gains ARE made from replacing the factory mufflers. Stock cans are where the restrictions are greatest considering the cats and baffles are only in the mufflers.
2008 bikes also have a third cat in the collector pipe that's attached to the headers so if I had an '08, I would go with a full system. IMO slip on's are fine for 2007 and earlier.
The 14's stock header is actually decent. Either way, most weight is saved by loosing the mufflers..

Even if you look at the Area P's (which are awesome), they are showing 5 hp without a remap. Figure 6-8 hp when tuned. A good full system will get you about double that power. In addition it will reshape the powerband to make the bike much faster under racing conditions. Using slip-ons will keep the same basic powerband as stock. Meaning it drops like a rock on the top end.
If you wonder what kind of pipes make real power...go to the track. You won't see many 8 second bikes running slip-ons.

True. I was referring more to the stock powerband and not so much the upper end RPM's
