Finally Rode One

The weather warmed-up a little here in Chicago and a friend of mine let me jump on his Blue '06 for a swap ride on my '05 GSX-R1000. He still has the flies in the bike and the only real upgrade he's done is a Muzzy M10 (which was pretty loud).

To be honest, I wasn't expecting the ZX-14 to feel much different than the ZX-12R. I was pleasantly surprised by the bike's smoothness and power delivery. The upgrade in torque was obvious right from the beginning. It felt like it wanted to pull no matter where I was in the power band. I was impressed.

Not long ago I was forced to let everything from my project ZX-12R go in a "fire sale". My plan was to go out and find another ZX-12R to build but now I think I'm going to go the ZX-14 route. Another guy I know who rebuilds bikes told me there are a million wrecked 14s all over the place and I just needed to let him know when I was ready to go. Hopefully by Spring '09 I'll be ready to get back in the game.

-4....as in minus four secondary throttle plates....

dont throw them out, as they were a gift from Kawasaki. It was the only way the factory workers could smuggle the wind chimes out of the factory for all of the ZX-14 riders.....

an uncorked 14 is night and day different!
like a whole new bike again, awe inspiring and sometimes awe struck.
20 mph roll on to - 150 mph, I found my uncorked zx14 to be about 15 bike lengths faster than a stocker!

That's the damn truth... and it makes it so much more manageable at the track that it's unreal. It's really nice to be able to launch out and not have it hit 6k and stand straight up. Not to mention the throttle response in the lower rpm range.

I've told him (my buddy) to take the flies out but he always starts talking about voiding the warranty and the rideability of the bike and all this other crap. I've told him a million times about all the information on the topic posted here but he refuses to listen. Ultimately, I think he's scared of the bike.

I also found it much more predictable when cornering, as the throttle and power are linear or relative to throttle position with the flies out, wheras with flies in you better watch the tach when leaned over the computer takes over instead of your wrist!

Flies in....the hit at 6000 rpm will light it up if not careful.

Yes it was a big relief to be able to throw the clutch away before 6000 rpm! and NO BOG!
I found it either bogged or wheelied, no matter how hard I tried to launch it in stock configuration.

I sold you 2 sets didn't I Rick?
I have sold about 58 sets of them, with only 1 complaint on fitment.

I offered to replace them, but he was handy enough to have enlarged the 1 hole already, and wasn't really complaining as much as making me aware.

I still have a few sets left.

I've done it! I talked him into removing the flies! I read a "how-to" thread on removing the flies that another member posted (complete with pics). The first step was to remove the fuel tank. He still has gas in the bike. Will this all have to come out prior to removing the tank?

you don't have to actually take it off... just remove the bolts and lift the front up in the air and prop it up so that you can get to the covers for the throttle bodies. The most important thing to remember is to take your time so that you don't strip any of the screws. get ready for a ride on a REAL zx14!

So there we were with the propane torch and some brand new screwdrivers. We removed the frame covers and heated the screwdriver. I took first crack at it and MAN those screws are in there tight. Long story short, in a 2 hour period we only got one "fly" out.

The first screw came out without much fanfare but the second one - oh my! We got about 2 full turns on the thing and it was stripped. Necessity is the mother of invention. I grabbed a pair of long handled pliers, crumpled the little "collar" around the head of the screw to create grab points and twisted it out. It was actually EASIER than slowly turning it with the screwdriver and it felt really good manhandling that little bugger out of the hole.

Couple things I learned - First, you must keep the flies still as you're turning the screw because when the flies start to open it changes the angle of the screwdriver against the head of the screw which can lead to quicker stripping of the head. Second, as soon as you run into any resistance turning the srew, it's time to re-heat the driver. Brute force is not your friend in this operation. Third, if you strip out the screw part-way through the operation it's not a total loss. You'll need some standard, long handled pliers to finish the removal of the screw but it's totally possible.

I'm going to do everything in my power to find one that already has the flies out when I look for mine but at least I'll know what I'm up against if I can't locate one that already has the work done.

before starting fly removal you should

1) run the motor through a heat cycle (or use a heat gun later to heat screws)
2) tape off the throttle
3) i can't remember which side of the motor its on, but zip tie off the actuator arm that opens and closes the throttle bodies so they can't be opened.
4) magnitize the screwdriver
5) be sure and tap the new screw driver a few times with a hammer to seat it in the screw
6) apply hard steady pressure perpindicular to the thottle body arm that the plate is screwed to as to not push the plates open or strip the screw
7) should come out fairly easy...remove zip tie...enjoy

Thanks. I will try a couple of these steps today when we get back to the business of removing the screws. More than anything else, I find patience to be the main ingredient with this procedure.

FYI, the following procedure worked great for me with absolutely no problems, cuss fits, or glitches.

1. Heat cycled the bike then shut her off.
2. Per forum advice: I bought a new high quality long shaft #2 phillips screwdriver.
3. I removed all necessary tupperware.
4. Removed fuel tank bolts and swiveled it around 180% using care with wiring and lines.
5. Disconnected the airbox access doors and unplugged the sensor.
6. Then just as a precaution I gathered the new screwdriver, some extra long nosed needlenose plyers, a magnetic pickup tool, a small grabber fish tool, and a good light.
7. I used no additional heat or soldering iron and removed the screws and flys with no stripping at all.
8. As crazy as it sounds (a plumber taught me this frozen fastener trick) If you'll "SLIGHTLY" tighten each fly screw it will break the loc-tite and they back right out, no bull.

I might add, this is the best Bang for the Buck out there, it transforms the bike in a good way. Oh yeah, if you open up the exhaust too, you'll need a PC to avoid a flat spot.
