Pissed off...Is a torque wrench a hand tool?
I stripped the adjustment handle on my craftsman torque wrench and tried to exchange it at my local sears store and they refused to honor the lifetime guarantee based on their assertment that torque wrenches are not hand tools. I left the broken wrench in the store and left in disgust. Needless to say I will never buy a craftsman tool again. So any suggestions on good quality, reasonably priced hand tools, specifically a torque wrench.

If you go to Sears web site you can see that depending on the model of torque wrench the warranty is lifetime to 90 days.
If yours was a lifetime one, print that page out and go raise hell with them!

I did send sears customer service a letter letting them know the ungodly amount of money I have spent on tools in their store over the years was coming to an aburpt end.
And it may be that the quarantee is different on the torque wrenchs but the snot nosed kid was tring to tell me a torque wrench was not a hand tool. And it wasn't like I tried to get a new $300 torque wrench...it was one of the smaller models appropriate for a part time do it yourselfer.

I just went threw the same thing about 6 months ago with my local sears. Told them i would never be back to buy another tool. The same day i got pissed off and went and bought a $300+ snap on wrench. Maybe not the brightest idea but i havent had a problem from the snap on yet! boooo to sears, lifetime warranty my white A$$. Well the snap on does not have a life time warranty but i did talk to my tool guy about it and it seems like they are willing to work with you atleast if you do break it. Instead of taking the sears rought and say duhhhh buy a new one?! LMAO

I just had a simular problem saturday. I bought a 40 piece metric tap and die set friday night and opened it saturday mourning to use it there were taps not threaded all the way, some with no head at all,and they were mixed up between std and metric. I kinda laughed a little that is until i got back to the sears i just bought them from. The guy said we don't warr, die's and i said i understand that if i break one but just look at the set. He said ok but he didnt know what good it would do''its policy they dont replace them. I asked for the manager' well here she comes with a look on her face like why are you making me work to walk all the way out here. I just knew where this was going, but i stayed quiet, she looked at the set' looked at me and then the cashier and said are you an idiot'' im not kidding her words. Told him to take his break and she helped me. I told her that sears was a few minutes away from losing one of their best customers on tools in 30 yrs.

I work for a company that sells Craftsman Tools (not Sears.) Unfortunately, they do only warranty the tool for 90 days. Also, that warranty is for "calibration only." I always make sure to let my customers know what they are getting into with these torque tools.
What the kid should have told you is that he can send is back to Danaher Tool Group (the maker of Craftsman Tools, as well as GearWrench, Allen Wrench Brand, Armstrong Tools: EXPENSIVE!! and Matco Tools) and they would rebuild your torque wrench for a fraction of the price of a new one.
I would really check into the warranty of any torque tool that you purchase b/c companies are really shying away from replacing these.
Also, Sears-Craftsman is not replacing tape measures under warranty anymore either. They have not turned a profit on tape measures in 30 years. Just a little FYI.
PM me and maybe I can get you hooked up with a new torque wrench at a discount.

gotta be a sign of the times when a Sears Craftsman warranty isn't honored any more...
same goes for costco... ... with all the years of them telling me that I shouldnt buy a big screen tv from bestbuy because costco would warranty it for life and exchange it if I was dissatisfied at any time, regardless of how long.. they go and change their policy to 90 days.

I do the majority of my shopping at the navy exchange these days. Sure everyone that works there is phillipino, or retarded, or both and I can't understand anything that any of them say... but they price match, and I don't get taxed because it's on base. Small victories my friends... small victories lol.

Kmart owning Sears is true...but really has nothing to do with it. These tools are made by Danaher Tool Group which is actually still in the USA. What they say really goes on how these tools are warrantied.

Oh no. Make just one call. To the Office of the CEO of Sears. Ask for his/her secretary. Explain your dilemma, VERY POLITELY, and ask for help. If you do it right, you'll win.
A secretary (pardon, Administative Assistant) has pull and will be flattered at the respect you show (which is probably not forthcoming from anywhere else) and whose business it is to help and solve problems. Plus, has the Boss's ear and will bend it to your benefit.
Let me know how you make out.
