Power Commander - Under Seat ??

My skills witht he search tool (both) have failed me. I foudn many posts about power commanders, but nothing for installing under the seat.

My Muzzy M14 + Carbon is underway. I'm prep'n to put all my 08 mods on my 09. I really really really want to install the power commander UNDER the seat and not zip'd to the ram air.

On my 08 i could not fit the plug through the tiny space int he frame anyplace. Can somebody give me instructions on how to accomplish this? Pics would really help.

I could do it if I pulled all the pins fromt he plastic housing, but I'm afraid of creating possible lose connections when re-pinning it.

Thanks in advance,

-Bonzai

PS. Please try and stay on-topic, no stories about how your uncle's third cousins ex boyfriend had a 14 and did it too.

Do not pull those pins out! It will make them loose. It can be done...it's just a tight fit. I don't have any pics of mine but, just look for the best route and don't be afraid to pull a few things out of the way to get the plug around the frame.

Mine is under the seat. You will need to lift the tank up to route cables. I believe they go through near the swingarm pivot...be patient.

Also, if you decide to install the ignition module later you will have to relocate the power commander to the suggested location or make extension cables.

KawaBonzai- A member on this board(ZXBOB) had the same setup and he had pics with it. Just search his threads and see if that doesn't give you a bit more info and pics

Route the cables along the right side, and under the tank, through the frame:

Then you can reach the ground for the battery easily as well.

Just curious why you want to mount the PCIII under the seat? If its for USB connection purposes, it may be easier to mount the PCIII by the ram tube. Then just route an extended USB cable to under the seat.

I don't connect to the PCIII often but when I do I only have to remove the seat to access the connection.

I like that idea.
It's the missing piece.
One note, you must start the bike to make map changes.
You can't get to the PC to use the 9v battery backup power, and the zx14 don't power it up until you hit the starter button. Still a good trade off to get it out of the way.

Either way with the extended USB to the seat, or the unit mounted under the seat you still have to take the seat off.

My reasons for mounting under the seat are ...

1. Can use the 9volt without needing to start the bike.
2. Access to buttons. (For temporary testing etc.)
3. So I can see it!

Reasons I hate mounting to RAM ...
1. Sticky tape fails.
2. Zip ties look ugly.
3. Next time I head-on a Jetta I wont have to worry about damaging my unit.

If I mount it and run the wires tot he "Right" side, will i still be able to get to the injector plug ont he "Left" side? the battery ground is a plus too. I'll pop the seat tonight and do some measuring.

dang....... that was a pain. Took a long time. You guys were right, it takes a long time and everything fits tight, but if you have patience, you can slowing work it into place. My bike is still in pieces, it is time for bed. Tomorrow I will put it together, revise my map a little bit, and then clean my air filter.

Another good thing about having it under the seat is being able to ground to the battery. Since I ran my wires on the right side of the bike, I pulled the engine harness to the clutch side of the motor and grounded to the battery. It took a long time, and when I eventually put nitrous on my bike, I'll be able to add fuel more easily without a computer.

So that explains how ya got the harness over to the right. Was it hard or did it move ok?

I'm planning on doing some touring as well, trips that include 6k or more elevation change. Being able to make minor adjustments without a laptop or without having to take "just 3 screws" off would be a great convenience.

The most difficult part was getting the PCIII harness from the right side of the engine, in and behind to make the final connection. Then once they are connected, they fit in behind the engine real nice like. You can pull them back to the clutch side of the motor (right side) and connect the ground to the battery.

My explaination isn't very good, so I'll try again....

I ran the wires through the right side of the frame. Once they are in the gas tank area, they can't get through where the engine harness enters, so the only other option is to pass the PCIII harness connectors through the right side. The connectors will plop out on the back right of the engine. From there, take the female engine harness connector and push it through to the clutch side of the motor. Connect the female engine harness to the male PCIII connector. Now, fish the female PCIII connector through the back of the engine.
Note: curse words and patience help to get this step completed
Now connect the male engine harness connector to the female PCIII connector. Now pull the connections back to the clutch side of the motor.
You can't pull them all the way back, but you only need to pull enough to get the ground connected to the negative battery terminal.
Does that answer all your questions????

Yes, I will expect plenty of curse words to fly.

I'll try your technique and I'll take photo's of each step. Cant strip down tonight - bike night - but I'll have it done by Sat.

Thx !

I ckicken'd out last night putting the bike back together.

I could not figure out how to remove that whole carbon can mess and the stuff under the seat. So the can stayed and the PC3 went up front.

Anyone know how to properly remove the whole carbon can thingy?
