Left exhaust can storage???
Looking at the available storage options for the ZX-14 leaves a bit to be desired. Most look like after thoughts and all add bulk to the bike's clean lines making a hot sportbike look too much like a tourer.
Most of you have seen my posts on the new exhaust I made for my ride and know that I still have my "Y-Pipe" down below with its left side blocked off. Since I still have my left factory can and midpipe intact sitting idle in my shop, I'm going to cut the factory can to the same length as my new right can and mount it back in place. The only difference will be that it will be completely hollow, have a removable endcap and have no exhaust running through it. It will be my version of a glove compartment for my ZX-14.
It should look exactly like a shorter, stock muffler and it will be removeable for daily driving. I only have a need for minor storage on some longer rides. With the size of the factory can, it should have more than enough room for a light rain suit, flashlight, gloves, keys, wallet, lunch snacks, bottled water or whatever.
Wish me luck. It should be interesting to see how this project (and excuse to spend more time working in the garage) turns out!!
Will post pics when done.

Status:
Muffler's cut short to match the right pipe, internal "plumbing" has been removed as were the two "bulkheads" (one solid metal, the other perforated like a thick screen). Only thing left to get out is the inner perforated wall that runs the length of the muffler and secures the packing. I had to stop there as my cut off wheel tool doesn't fit inside the muffler to cut out the lining. The muffler is like a double walled cylinder. The inner wall won't just pull out since I guess it was welded in place at the front of the can during assembly and I need to leave that part intact and structurally sound.
There's about and eighth inch clearance between the inner and outer walls. I need to get deep inside the muffler from the rear and cut a circle through the inner cylinder without cutting through the outside of the muffler.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

NYC-
What you are doing is quite smart and has been done before. During WWII the WASPS (our women transportation pilots) used this same technique when flying fighters around the country after they were either made or repaired at the factories. The women would deliver the P-51s to cities on the coast and then be required to stay over a night or two over until they could pick up another figher plane to ferry back home. In case you haven't been in the cockpit of a P-51 or Hellcat, there is absolutely no room for any bag or suitcase so the women used to store their shoes and clothing in the machine gun housings located in each wing. Worked out fine--

Here's the pipe being shortened:

Below is a view inside the gutted muffler. That inner wall is what I have to get out. A friend is bringing over a SMALL die grinder tomorrow. Hopefully that will do the trick.

Well I took mine apart to try to remove the cat material so part of it will not apply.

I cut the welds off the forward end cap slid it forward. then you would have to grind the seam weld to separate the core from the case. After that I imagine you could cut the end of the core and reattach it to the case.

Here are the results. The faux hole is closed off internaly with a black cap. The end cap is the front cap from the right pipe. The inside front of the can is closed with a piece of plastic siliconed in place:

Looks great. How about considering a locking "gas cap like device" painted black that would be a little recessed (so as to look like an exhaust) and only allowed to be opened by inserting a key into the center of it.? Just a thought--

I like the concept but the bike looks unbalanced. If you had a set of dump tubes for exhausts and both canisters hollowed out. That might do the trick. Just my two cents. If anything, I like the idea about the gas cap instead of the outlet.

I agree, I don't care for the look either. I'm going to experiment withe the recessed blackout idea (thank flyboy). Good idea about the dump tube too! Back to the drawing board!!!

NYC: I have come to a few conclusions about you>
1. You are very creative.
2. You are very good at cutting metal.
3. You are quite handy with a rivet gun.
4. You are very frugal.
5. You are certainly enjoying your ZX-14.
I cant wait to see what you create next !!

Yes I agree. The ultimate look would be were both pipes look identical. Maybe the smaller tip could "screw" into the larger tube. Locking device might be extreme for I can't think of any valuables one would want to keep inside the tube overnight. Tube would be ideal for extra shirt, windbreaker, gloves, gps, phone, wallet, maybe video camera, tools, glasses, tampons , etc. all of which most likely would be removed for the night.

I'm going to look into a thin wall pipe that's a hair smaller than the can. Cut a 2" section and thread it internally and tack weld it slightly recessed into the can and use a standard, threaded pipe end cap painted flat back for the cover.
