Metal flakes in oil!
Hi everyone, new here but for my first post I would like some thoughts on what you guys might foresee as the problem with my 14 .
As you can see by the pics I have discovered after an oil change some metal flakes in the bottom of the oil pan.
Pan was spotless before the change so its not a leftover .
bike has 8600km on the clock 2007 model, stock standard no drag racing more touring than anything.
About to do a big trip next week hence the oil change and am now worried.
Does not knock or make funny noises etc and still goes hard.
Any input would be appreciated. Cheers.

are you sure that they're metal flakes? maybe it's clutch. I haven't had a bike do that, but that's about what my banshee's oil looked like when the clutches were getting ready to go. Maybe Lee will have something to say about it.

That's brass bearing meterial, classic rod damage.
Pull that engine now.
You may save the crank.
Do you have a knock yet, under load?

You change the oil then pull the pan? I don't get it, what prompted you to pull the pan? Some brass material in the oil is normal but what you have there looks excessive to me.

As my motor is now broken into two halves in my garage as I type, I am pretty confident that is bearing material. I second what the other guy said. Stop riding and pull the motor and have it fixed. Oh and clutches dont have goldish looking metal in them. Thats the bearing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If it is not knocking yet you will most likely not have and scaring on the crack. mine started knocking and by the time I pulled it, it had just started roughing the crank.

it is possible that wrong kind of oil cause this lubrication problem some of bearings? i use synthetic 10w-40 without problem. schnitz racing sells oil valve to oilpan which lift oil pressure, could it fix this bearing lubrication problem?

It's not uncommon for these bikes to air lock after a oil change.
Especially when you do a cold oil change.
Sometimes people just let them run until they get oil pressure.
No saying that's what happened, but I just recieved another call last month
about why this oil light won't go off on a zx12.
Mains flicker the oil light, rods knock.
If it mains, get in there quick or you will need cases.
GET IN THERE QUICK!!!!

Thanks all for your replies.
Bike went to dealership today and so did the oil in the plastic collection pan(not the actual oil pan from the bike, sorry for the confusion SubZero) so I could show them first hand what was there.
Kawi mechanic says definitely main bearing as its brass material and he has seen this on only one other.
All services have been performed by Dealership so they should know their stuff when changing oil I would hope but this is the first time that I have changed oil and Im glad I did.
Strange thing is it doesnt knock at all and bike has not been raced or flogged?
Still under warranty thankfully, I will keep you all posted to the outcome, Cheers.

Isn't it a bronze or white metal, or do they use a copper/zinc alloy?

How many times do we hear this?
I waiting on someone besides me and Karl to say we rode the sheet on of it, many wheelies, more stoppies, dropped it a few times, spray every friday and now the motor is hurt.

I don't see what running the crap out of the motor has to do with this .. Jesse bike had 100s of passes on boost and before that 100s of passes on spray .. He has around 800 passes total on his bike plus it's his daily driver ..Mine has been sprayed over and over and has over 1000 passes on it ... Bently raced his zx14 from day one and never had a problem ..Ninjaboy has about the same number of passes as my zx14 and none of us have had a bearing problem .... Lucky ? When i change my oil ( about 20+ times in 3600 Miles) i never add oil to the filter or prime the motor , i just fire it up and oil light goes out and i'm done ..
Wheelies cause the problem ? I know guys with zx14 that wheely the crap out of them and NO problems ..
To hard on the break in ? Well mine went right to the drag strip and so did many others ..
I think this problem of spun bearings must start at the factory ... There must be a few of these motors that got the wrong sizing on the bearings .. Those bike were doomed from the start , and no matter how you ride it it will spun a bearing ...

the manual for a 12(and im assuming ther 14) states to measure bearing clearance with plastigauge. if they do that at the dealership instead of actually measure with the proper tools, its no wonder theres a few mistakes every now and then. use a couple good mics and a bore gauge and do it right!
my break in after my reuild last winter: a couple heat cycles, a burnout, a few runs up and down the road and then full out drag passes at the track.

this thread inspires me to get nitrous...
I don't abuse my bike but I ride it hard. As long as I keep up with the maintainence I don't see why it won't go 50k plus miles.
