Cranking Without Starting/How to?
I'd like to turn the motor over to burp the air out of the oiling system...without the bike starting. Is there an easy way to get it to crank but not fire?

Yup pull the power wire off the fuel pump ....

i have never heard of burping the air out of the oiling system. what is the reason for this?

No real reason , the oil will get in the system real fast and cause no damage ...Shane is just being extra carefull and there is nothing wrong with being carefull .....

Doesn't holding the throttle wide open prior to pushing the start button have the same effect? Like the clear flood mode on cars?

Trying to ask a serious question, thank you. In my past experience as an auto mechanic
I have done that to clear a flooded engine in a fuel injected car. I wanted to know if
the same was true for a fuel injected motorcycle.

icarus, He is talking about the OIL system. Not the fuel system. I think you may have read it wrong. If not... trust me... you will pee your pants if you start your bike without oil and Wide Open Throttle... If your motorcycle is flooded... I still don't reccomend starting with full throttle. Wait about an hour unless you can't wait. Also, it is too easy to wash out the cylinders on the bike. Just let it sit and try later. Fuel injection bikes normally have no problem startng. He is looking at the opposite... trying to get the motor to NOT start. And lastly... when the car is flooded, don't do as my Dad did... smoking a cigarette, plugs pulled... turning the car motor over and lighting the cylinder... C;mon... you've done it.

i don't know how easy it is on a 14, but on the 12 i just unplug the injector harness; completely accessible, 2 sec job.

Just pull the plug wires off or unplug them. no spark no fire!

Do what Entropy said.
If it is easy to get to. Basically, what the purpose is, is to get oil pressure, before starting the bike, MAKING SURE, your main bearings are good........
And, its done with no fuel, so, you don't flood the bike, and wash down the cyl.

thoroughly. On FI autos if you push the gas pedal to the floor prior to starting the engine
will crank but not fire. This is called the "Clear flood mode." I just wanted to know if the same was true for FI bikes.

I did end up disconnecting the stick coils, and it did back fire pretty decent when it started. Fortunately I only cranked it for about 10-15 seconds total. When I started it, no oil light, so mission accomplished.

on my 12, i just put 12v to the starter. (key off) with a batt charger or a jumper wire from the batt. i have a short wire connected to the pos terminal so i can charge my bike without taking off the cover, and regulary use it to test stuff. touch it to the post on the side of the battery box and the starter turns the motor over with nothing else being on

That's why i said to unplug the fuel pump wire ...

I'll probably do that next time. I was trying to avoid any further disassembly of the bike...(eg. tank, covers, steering damper, etc).

You know shane i have not looked but i wonder if there is a fuse for the fuel pump ?? That would be very easy to get to ...

The fuse removal is the easiest way by far remove the ignition fuse or the ECU fuse bike should not start. Those coil sticks are a pain in the butt to remove the harness from.

I looked in the small fuse block, but none were labeled for the pump or fuel system.I'll investigate it more next time, for sure.
It only took me one minute to get to the coils, since that part of the bike was open already....

Glad it wasn't too hard to remove the stick connectors but there doesn't look like there is a dedicated fuel pump fuse according to the wiring diagram. They just use the 35 amp main fuse which would probably shut everything off.
