High Pressure Oil Relief???

I hear a lot about shimming the oil relief, or installing a high pressure relief. My question is: why? Obviously this will give more pressure at high rpm, but is there really a pressure problem to begin with? And if it such a great idea for engine longevity, then why doesn't it come that way from the factory?

This will not affect pressure at idle, correct? Isn't that where the main problem with low pressure is to begin with?

I'd like to get some opinions on this mod, and data to back up its usefulness on the ZX-14.

Greg over on psychobike did some testing and reported it help oil pressure at idle,
and it helps his big motors stay together. I'm doing it next time I pull the pan.

I dont see how that would change pressure at idle unless the bypass was opening at idle. that might happen when the motor is cold and the idle is high but not likely when the motor/oil is hot. Sounds like bullshit to me.

Don't do it shane'' just set your idle at like 1200 rpm's. This will help psi at idle more then you would think. When you up the pressure it takes to releive the bypass your putting more load on the oil pump. I have had them distort the pump plate at 100 psi,so you know its working the hell out of the pump! You can buy a stronger plate from muzzy and others but why? If you have a big stroker or turbo then yeah but not for what your doing. Bill......

Thanks for the advice, guys. I usually set my idle at 1200-1300 rpm. It sounds like this is a modification that doesn't apply to me at this point.
