Oil weight and type

OK, I know this topic's probably been to death, but I got stung today at a dealers and need some answers & advice. While completing several mods over winter, I replaced the oil, filter and coolant while I already had most of the front end off. My bike's an 07 & it's only done 4900 km's.
Here's my question/story. The oil I used was the Motul 5100 Ester 10W 50 (98% synth) oil. I've always used this in the past with no problems. When I bought the oil etc I bought a 4Lt pack of oil which turned out to be a little shy of enough. Needing some more oil I went to a dealer which is closer to my home to just buy a 1Lt top-up bottle. There I was told "now way should I use that oil, I should use the Motul 300V Double Ester 10w 40 (100% synth), at $115.00 AU for a 4Lt pack. Furthermore, I should drop my fresh oil, drain the filter, and replace the oil with the 300V. Wanting to do the best for my bike I bought the oil, but decided to make the trip to my preferred dealer to confirm this advice. There I was told it was a load of crap! The oil that I'd already used was good, and that the other was an oil designed purely for race bikes, and that I should only consider using that "overkill" oil after 12000 to 18000 km's.
Before this I always thought I knew what I was talking about, but now I'm not as sure.
Can anyone explain or confirm either of these principals? And explain what the two oil weight numbers or types mean?
Thanks for taking the time to read or reply to this.

The oil you have in your bike is fine. The 300V is great (I use it) but to drain the other oil is ridiculous. It will protect your engine better that most oils on the market.
I would stay away from the dealer who told you to drain it. They are full of crap.
