Best size sprocket for the dragstrip
So, what's the best size sprocket for the dragstrip with a 190/50R17 Shinko - a 41t or a 43t?
I'm already one down on the countershaft (16t).

145 unsuited. 06 14, Brock smeg, BMC race filter, Muzzy air shifter, Pingel wheelie bars, (I know - sissy bars, training wheels - whatever you want to call them). I've been using a M/T 7" slick which is really tall and ballons up as you're going down the track. I tried a 46t and 47t to compensate for the "rising effect" the M/T has as your accelerating. The 60 ft. and 1/8 mile were ok, but nothing to brag about considering my weight and using bars.
60 ft. - 1.36
1/8 - 5.89 @ 125.8
The bike just doesn't pick up on the upper end like I think it should. I'm hoping it's because of the M/T. Best 1/4 - 9.23 @ 145.05. I also found out the M/T was rubbing on the front of the swingarm. That didn't help. I think I should easily be in the 150's. That's why I'm trying a different tire. The M/T is 1-1 1/2 inches taller than the Shinko and I think it was messing with the gearing the faster I went down the track because of the way it grew. There's only one way to find out and that's what I'm trying to do now.
Oh yeah, I forgot. PC with Brock's track map, Brock's lowering strap, and no flies.

17/45 = 2.647 I didn't care for the 16t---for several reasons.
(stock) 17/41=2.41
16/41= 2.56
16/42=2.62
16/43=2.68
16/44=2.75

125 in the 1/8 mile and 145 in the 1/4 ? you are not getting a very good back half .. You should be closer to 28 29 MPH on the back half but you only have 20 MPH ....If the MT slick is growing and hitting the swing arm i guess that would kill MPH in the top end ... You have eveything needed to go 8.80s @ 155 so something is not right ...
I'm 150 pounds and use 16/41 ... seems to work ok for me ..

I know Lee. Something's definately wrong on the back half. There're guys that weigh 75 to 100 lbs. more than me and their mph is more than mine. Pathetic, if you ask me. I hope it's because of the tire. Like I said, the Shinko is a lot shorter than the M/T, so I shouldn't need such steep gearing. 41 or 43? I guess I could take both of them with me next weekend and see what works best.

Yup you will have to try a few different gears to see what works best for you ..No one gear fits all ... Lets us know what happens after you change that tire to one that doesn't rub ....

Maybe look at your clutch also, might be slipping in the higher gears?

Yes. I'm strapping the front.
I'm trying a R008 Shinko slick (no grooves, completely smooth) on Saturday. I hope it does the trick. I think I'll go with the 41t sprocket first and see how it works.
I think the clutch is just fine. I only have 14 runs on the bike (3,650 miles). If it was the clutch I would hear or feel it slipping. I still think it's the M/T slick. I read on another forum where a guy with a 14 had his bike stretched and ran some good numbers. He put it back to stock wheelbase, put some bars on, put the same M/T slick on that I have, and went slower.
I hope the tire's my answer.
