hit and run

After all the trouble I had getting the SB6 working, I finally hooked it up the airshifter and ran off a few test passes in my neighbourhood - worked perfectly! On the way home, I stopped briefly at a strip mall to run an errand. I came back out, climbed on the bike, put my foot down on the footpeg and missed it completely. Upon looking down, I saw the peg laying on the ground, under the bike. So off the bike I get and now all the damage becomes evident - all body panels on the left side have suffered severe road rash, footpeg broken off, shift linkage bent, mirror trashed, clutch lever bent badly, front fender broken and the support bar that holds the gauge cluster snapped. Lots of paint on the ground in the parking space.

While I'm on the phone with the police, a guy walks up and tells me he saw the entire event. A lady in a minivan backed into the bike which shoved the bike forward and ultimately down. According to the witness, the lady and her companion got out of the van, looked at their rear bumper, got back in the van and drove away. Unlimited thanks to the witness for getting vehicle/driver description and a licence plate number!!!!! (It was the witness who actually picked my bike back up and put it back on its kickstand.)

While these are ultimately cosmetic issues, my two big concerns are with the steeering geometry (the handle bars were in the locked position when the bike was hit) and the transmission (1st gear engaged when the bike was shoved forward). Any mechanics out there that wish to comment. When I talked the to insurance company last night to express my concerns, they didn't seem to feel that investigating either of these two issues was necessary.

I'm not a mechanic, but the force of pushing the bike with the car should not be a problem for the transmission, IMO. It was nothing compared to the force the motor puts on the driveline...and it was rotating the parts in the proper direction.

There is no question, however, that the bike needs to be checked for proper wheel alignment and true-ness, and overall straightness. It could very well be a-ok, but there is no reason to take any chances.

Just my .02.

Shane

You are within your rights to insist that the frame geometry and integrity is checked. The insurer will be aware that there can be much more wrong than the obvious cosmetic damage. They will try to get you to settle as cheaply as possible though, so it's up to you to insist that the bike is put back into the condition it was in before the crash. No more than you are entitled to after all.

That was a great ending to the story!!!

Wait till that C - - - gets a call from the insurance company...lol...lol

Tell them you want a new handle bar, to replace the one that hit the ground...The forks will be fine after they take the front wheel off, put the axle back in the forks loosening them up at the tripple tree and tell them to lower the forks a 1/2 inch...That way your sure they re- aligned the forks...Im sure everything else will be fine the bikes are durable from fall overs...

Sounds like she needs to get arrested for Evading, which is what she did when she left the scene of the accident.

I lose faith in cagers more and more each day.....

I would call the newspaper and give them the scoop...maybe they could post the description of the vehicle and palte number....as well as put outh there that a witness observed the whole CRIME.......and the accomplice....

bet you'd get some "get right" out of those 2 "can't get rights".....

I absolutely hate criminals....if they would run over your bike and leave, it makes you wonder what else they would do if they thought nobody was watching...... pure scum....
sad part is, they probably have kids they are passing these trailer trash criminal traits onto....

Evading is when you try and run from the police. She is guilty of at least leaving the scene of an accident and failure to report an accident. No evading.

She is still a stupid bitch though..

Break it off in her..
