Had a similar scare once with a dead fox. I was riding a GPz900 back then, the one with the 16 inch front wheel but surprisingly stayed on. Glad you're ok.

armadillos can be bad news, like a moving speed bump

i have always heard, that if there is something like a dog, fox, armadillo in the road to not hit the brakes and stay on the gas so the front shocks don't compress with you hitting brakes

I've kinda been taught similar in that if there's a small ounce of time, you'd want to slow down / brake then raise yourself up off the seat and position your weight towards the rear as you approah the obstacle. Keep the bike straight, and apply some throttle as you go up and over the item. I have hit a few things on the road, small animals and such (the biggest item was a trash bag full of trash tumbling across the highway on a windy day).
A good rule of thunb; if it's the size of a cat, rabbit, etc, stay your course, keep your eyes on the road and run it over. If it's anything larger than that take evasive maneuvers such as above.
Glad you made out ok...
Phil
