searching for information
This is just something that has been getting on my nerves lol. Pretty much every time that someone has a question that has been asked before they get at least one response saying to use the search engine. I don't know if many of you have tried it out, but it fucking blows. You would have about the same luck just searching google. If you were a service manager at a shop and someone came in with a question would you tell someone to go read the shop manual? It's kind of the same thing. Chances are, in the time that it takes you to tell someone to search for it you probably could have just answered the damn question. When it is all said and done, who gives a shit if there are 15 threads about oil or tires or exhausts. Suck it up and quit complaining.
Okay, I'm done ranting lol.

Unfortunately the searches even includes the little notes that EVERYONE has at the botttom of their thread/responce
See even in Bently's specs below. If I wanted to search "Air shifter", it would pull up every post Bently have started or replied. How come the search can't be directed totally to the threads? If that could be accomplished, you would have all of the relevant posts for your search and no fluff!

I agree with you guys. If anyone wants to find out something, just send me a PM. I will never say "use the search feature". I will respond as soon as I can, even if I don't have the answer. If I don't have the answer, I will likely tell you exactly where or who to contact. But it will always be within 24 hrs or less.

Agreed here.
I've been nailed to the cross several times for posting and "supposedly" not searching.
this site doesn't maintain it's own index of keywords like other forums do. I have several forums up that have 700+ users onlien at any given time. Those forums all build and maintain their own SQL databases of keywords. As Admin I can do maintenance on those tables and also define custom logic to really make the searches pinpoint accurate.
This site relies on GOOGLE to crawl it's site and provide the search ability. If I wanted to use GOOGLE I would just search for ... [air filter inurl:zx-14.com] for christ sake and get the same results.
Heck, even using 'air filter' here in an example will cause this thread to now appear in future searches when this thread has NOTHING to do with air filters.
GOOGLE changes it's algorithms all the time in it's index building methodology. So when that happens you get different results based on GOOGLE changes.

KawaBonzai, can you point me to the site u mention? I'm not entirely clear on the keyword system you are describing.
To all those unhappy with the search, note there are 2 methods:
1. Enter your query into the search box at top left. This goes to Google (exactly as KawaBonzai mentioned, it's just a shortcut to that method)
2. Click the Search link at top left. This goes to the old, custom board search. That used to be the only search we had but people didnt like it and wanted Google search.
Here's the limitation: google doesn't know the site structure so it can't search according to who posted, date, forum. Our search can, but we ain't google, so we can't provide meaningful results the way they can. Our custom search will find the same pages, but it won't rank them the way google does. Try both searches and see which one you find provides better results.
Fact is no search is going to completely satisfy. When you search for "air shifter" the server doesn't know exactly what you are looking for, and what you would consider the ideal result. It can guess based on how many views or responses a thread got, or how many times the word shows up on the page (this is what google does, approximately), but it cant know anything about the quality or important of a thread, especially in regards to a particular search term like "air shifter". Adding the ability to rate threads helsp some in this area, but we used to have that featur and hardly anyone uesed it, which meant the results were unreliable and meaningless. Plsu it requires a significant mental investment from the membership to provide the ratings, which i think few people are willing to do.
So if y'all got some suggestions, i'll be glad to hear them, but if ur expecting miracles... well, they're called miracles for a reason.

My post wasn't aimed at the search function so much as it was the people who jump peoples asses for asking questions. One site that has a pretty good search on it is http://www.m109riders.com
