30lb loss or 10hp gain

In the 1/4 mile if you took the same bike, rider, track, temp, etc., which would be quicker?
1. shave 30lbs off the bike
or
2. add 10hp to the rear wheel

10 hp is worth about a tenth of a second and 1 mph on my bike .... I have put on 15 pounds over the last year and lost about a tenth of a second .... So if i had to guess a 30 pound weight loss would be the winner ..

Less weight requires less torque to get the mass moving and less weight requires less horsepower to keep the mass moving. So all things being equal with the same HP & torque, less weight means quicker times and higher mph.

Lets look at the math: Bike and Rider weigh 750 lbs and the bike makes 150 hp.
Lose 30 lbs:
720 lbs bike/rider/etc. divided by 150 hp = 4.80 pounds per 1 horsepower.
Gain 10 HP:
750 lbs bike/rider/etc. divided by 160 hp = 4.68 pounds per 1 horsepower.

Give me the 10 horse's or better yet do both.
Lose 30 lbs and gain 10 hp:
720 lbs bike/rider/etc. divided by 160 hp = 4.50 pounds per 1 horsepower.

If you shave 30 lbs off the rider, you get much better results than off the bike.
Due to the fact you will lower the CG of the total package which will net much better ET's & Mph.

Ask anyone who has tried a drag seat if they noticed any difference,
exactly why Kawabunga's bike should ET pretty well into the 8's once they
get the set-up down and get to a good track.

Acceleration is related to the power / weight ratio. Real numbers are as follows based on the above estimated weights and hp. The higher the calculated value, the faster it will accelerate. Not a lot of difference in 30lbs lost to 10hp gained.

150 HP
750 LBS w/ rider = .2 SUCKING HIND TIT

150 HP
720 LBS w/ rider = .208333 3RD PLACE BY A SPLIT HAIR

160 HP
750 LBS w/rider = .213333 2ND PLACE BY A SPLIT HAIR

160 HP
720 LBS w/rider = .22222 THE WINNER ( GAINED 10HP & LOST 30 LBS )

Power to weight ratio is a big factor in faster acceleration.

Comparo factor: F-16 = single engine / F-15 dual engines-has more HP than the F16 ** F16 outperforms the F-15 by a significant margin due to the "power to weight ratio".

30 pounds. when I went on a diet I noticed a much bigger difference in ET not only that but I also notice a HUGE!!! difference when I put a skinny focker on my bike

Interesting...I would have thought the 30lb loss would have netted a winner in ET but a loser in MPH. But my question was which one is quicker so?????????????

Hmmm...well lets see. I weighed 230 in shorts last year with a best of 9.23 at 148. This year i weigh 175-180 in shorts and seen a best of 9.12 at 150. My 60's last year was alot better with 1.41-1.42, i havent had much practice this year with 60's in the 1.44-1.46 range. I think with some 60's as good or better (should) than last year i should see 9.0's....so i would guess 30 pounds is a tenth and 1 mph? Also that 9.23 was under best conditions and the .12 was not...so i might have a 8.90 in me.

I guess it all depends on your set-up...you can drop 30 pounds off the bike just by ditching the exhaust and putting on a drag seat.

OK I was wrong, I just ran the numbers thru the online dyno, here is what I got:

750lbs/ 150hp = 9.96et/ 136.8mph

720lbs/ 150hp = 9.82et/ 138.71mph

750lbs/ 160hp = 9.74et/ 139.8mph

BUT

720lbs/ 160hp =9.61et/ 141.7mph

Dropping the weight is cheaper than adding 10hp, depending on where the 10hp is coming from...If you have a stock bike and put an aftermarket pipe on then its all good, your getting the best of both!!!...If you already have a pipe and want to do motor work, forget it, it's way cheaper to drop 30lbs. for you and you'll physically feel better!!!

I agree with that....if it takes motor work for another 10 hp your better off dropping the weight.

As far as 1/4 mile times and acceleration, 7 lbs = approx. 1 hp.

Loosing 30 lbs is like gaining 4.3 hp
And gaining 10 hp is like loosing 70 lbs

680 suited 9.12@149=177hp? hmm... my bike made 190 hp on Schnitz dyno which would be a 8.91@152 That sounds that better too me..
