Hard to shift to First and more clutch questions.

OK- First post here, now down to business.

`07 14- 280+ miles on her so far. Love the bike, but thought it would be a little more smooth and not soo clunky.

Issue. Previously read a post or two about shifting from N to 1st and getting a bad clunk. Well, I have the same issue and just thought it was the NEWness working its way out. Has everyone experienced the same sort of thing?

Second, when I put to Nuetral after driving and release the clutch, I can feel and hear a grinding. Now I don't think thats normal. Also, while riding I hear a noise that I can't really describe coming from the front end- assumed it was the fan kicking on but now, as I have ridden a bit and am more compfortable with the bike I don't believe it is. Ohh, and noise is intermitten- seems only I can hear it when the bike is warm, check that HOT, - I dunno... Maybe it is just some sort of phobia I am having. Almost don't want to wait to take her back to the dealer for my 600mile service/once over.

The idle noise you hear is normal and not grinding, just the bigger than normal gears backlashing on the shafts I'm pretty sure, anyway no problem in 14K. The klunk is also normal. First gear is quite large for a motorcycle, and many cars.

Every Kawasaki I have owned (1000R/ZX11/ZZR600/ZX14) has a pronounced clunk when shifting from Neutral into first, particularly when cold. Nothing to be concerned about.

the noise you hear in neutral is the huge tranny gears turning and normal, the clunk in first is normal and does get better with time and oil changes and break in, if you keep your idle at 1000 not more it won't clunk so much from neutral to first, if you can lean it to the right and work the clutch in and out when warming up and it will be even smoother, and after is it broken in (i waited til 2500 miles) a good synthetic oil will help. i use motul 300v 15w50 but i hear amsoil is fine too.

Agreed.
The clunk going into 1st is the clutch dragging and freeing off.
The cacophony you can hear in idle is the gearbox, should subside if you hold the clutch in.

Like the guys said, all perfectly normal.

Guess this is where I mention a problem I had. My friend noticed a odd clunking feel/sound during corner entries. Really spooked him, but I barely noticed it myself so I ignored it.

Until I changed out the front springs and noticed that the steering head nut was not even finger tight. I got it to turn nearly one full revolution before it bit!

Clunk is gone now, but damn thats just shoddy assembly!!

I found a lot loose too, several threads in the past about this. And had the tip over sensor recalled for loose. But everyone should go through their bike real good, who trusts the dealer to anyway :P

The clunk is gears not being lined up just right, no biggie, they all do it.........

other option, is do like I do, and put it in gear, then start it........, easier on parts....., especially when you have spent 1500 on a tranny.........

Hey ! Welcome Zonie !!! (Arizona)

My 08 ZX-14 does the same thing. I took it in for it's 600 mile service and the mechanic told me the same thing ... "First gear is huge!"

Up to 800 miles now and it's not "clunky" all the time, but roughly 80% now.

My bike idles at 1300 rpm I think, gonna try for 1k when i get time.

If ya get to Tucson give a holler!
