1st maintenance

1st maintenance was at 1k. I couldn't get an appointment and now I'm up to 2300. Probably 2500 by Tuesday when it goes in. Is running that long a problem? Wasnt't too aggressive. Probably only went 2/3's of the potential. Some highway, local and twisty.

Secondly. If I'm in and they are pulling the fairing anyway should I have them install the new exhaust and pull the flies or is this something that i should do outside of the dealership? Any thoughts would be appreciated

Thanks

Have you at least changed the oil? I'm no expert on break-ins but I know that it's critical to get that oil out of there as soon as it's you're done creating flakes. Some do it a few times BEFORE their 600-mile service.

If you have not changed your break in oil that's a big problem.

Haven't done anything. Riding Sunday. I'm way past 600 miles. I was told 1k but the dealer was booked so I went to another and got my appointment but I'm still over 2k.

It's the easiest oil change on a bike. The filter is right in front. You need a filter wrench to get it loosened as Kawi puts in on gorilla tight. Seriously you want to get that break in oil out of there. It is full off metal dust and crud from everything wearing in.

Oh man, you need to learn how to do the basics before riding anymore. Oil change, wheel removal, and chain adjusting. Everyone needs to learn how to do ATLEAST those 3 things when they own a bike. It's like having a car and not knowing how to jack it up to take the wheel off. :

I changed my oil at 500miles and I'm about to do it again this week since I just hit 1000. Then I will do it again at 2000. Then every 2000miles I will do it from there on out, or no longer than 2 months, which ever comes first.

You need a mentor to teach you. Someone that's been riding for a year or 2 that took the time to know what a motorcycle is.

I remember when I didn't know. I just took the time and did it myself to learn. It's common sense because we all know where the wheel is, where the filter and oil plug are, and where the chain is. I sat down and learned. It's mandatory for ownership and your own safety in my opinion. Nobody should be riding longer than a month w/out knowing this stuff.

Hey guys, its great to hear your opinions. I've ridden street bikes for over 25 years. The factory specs are one thing, but I know everything is engineered to with-stand multiple time specs. Not that I temp the fates, but this is a dealer time appointment spec. I've had other street bikes that lasted for years that weren't so specific. Not that I want to temp the fates but I will be riding this weekend. Thanks for your support.

Ouch!
On second thought, maybe I should pay a little more attention on what has been written. After all, that's why I'm on the site.
Thanks

Oil changes are very important as stated above...
Relax though.
U can do that easily enough.
Have you done anything like this in the past?

Lefty loosy and righty tighty... Socket wrench...

17mm for the oil plug.

Before you start goto your dealer and buy a couple oil filters.
Get an oil pan. (get a bucket also for your used oil, with a lid that seals after it is full)
Go to a snap on truck. They have a really nice oil filter removing tool that you may use on your vehicles also. It fits on a socket wrench and has 3 arms that bite into the filter and take it off everytime. I never have to fight with oil filters. As mentioned kawi fits those dang things on extreamly snug.
Warm up your engine a little. 1-2 minutes (oil flows out better)
undo the nut and drain oil into your pan. (do not burn your fingers on exhause or hot oil)
Take your oil filter remover and spin it off... (watch fingers on exhaust)
Let all oil drain. I normally leave mine dripping for a couple hours. (first oil change)

Open you oil of choice and wet the rubber ring on the oil filter with oil...
Screw the filter back into place. Do not force this. It should thread on really easily. Do not cross thread. Continue to spin oil filter on snug.

Now replace drain plug. Tighten.
Now add oil. ( how much read manual) With the bike off the kick stand you should see oil between the indicator lines. Pay attention to this.
Once you think you have the right amount of oil in the machine.
Replace the filling cap.
Now start the bike. run it fow 20 - 30 secs. Shut it down. Re-verify your oil lvl.
You will most likley have to add more oil.

Dont know if you need this. But I thought why the hell not. It did not sound like you have done this before.

Take care!

4 quarts exactly will do it, remove drain and filter, let it drain, put a litlle oil in the filter and install filter and plug add the rest of the 4 quarts. you are done.

Change the oil!!!! I dumped mine at the first 60 miles and you should have seen the crap in it. NOT a pretty site. I dont know if it was left over milling junk or just stuff from running the engine but it surprised the hell out of me.

Cheers
Kinley
