Michlin Pilot Power for strip

Before anyone says anything negative this is a daily rider. Don't wish to extend the swingarm because the bike still needs to dodge truck tires and other highway crap. turned a 10.60 at 144.87 mph on pump gas. 60' 2.60, 1/8 7.20 @ 111.56, I know this is a very slow start but the strip just opened for the first time April 19th. and are still sorting out tires. Nervous Nellie about abusing the clutch, can't go full throttle until the very end of the 1/8 want's to be a sky hook. To the main question.....how much abuse can the clutch take?

im not nearly as good as these guys but u can abuse the clutch a LOT more than you are. i do 6.37 1/8th with 1.60 60ft. i am one of the very few that has had clutch problems, but the more i think about it, it could have been my fault for hot lapping the bike... u should be able to go wot wayy before the 1/8 mile. as for a tire, i run the shinko 003 NOT ultra soft and do fine at stock wheelbase and get fairly good miles out of it on the street

It was a big improvement over the BT020 sport touring. Get the Kaw parts at cost so will be using the clutch like a teenager.

Depends on which tire your talking about and how long the bike is. Last weekend on My 60 inch bike with stock tire ran 38 psi with no trouble. Last year with the 14 at 4 inches over would run between 8 to 14 psi in my ultra soft shinko before it would hook. When 14 was stock wheelbase with pilot power would run between 38 to 40 psi and hook fine.

Better clean the pick up every couple clutch packs you go through, or you will be sorry......

Hey clean, why a 180 series?

And for that matter fellas, wouldnt running a 200 at lower PSI hook even better? Granted its the kind of traction that only a lowered extended bike could utilize, but still...

I was leaning towards a 200 myself on the premise that being a 320 pound SOB on a heavy bike the extra large patch would come in handy when I roll on the throttle coming out of the corners. I like leaving black marks, but only when I WANT to leave them!

At 320 pounds i didnt think you would have much problem with traction??....The 200 tire is alot...alot...heavier than a 180 or the 190 for that matter. The 200 curls up more on the stock rim compared to the 180-190....so you really dont get as much rubber on the ground as you might think.

I was afraid of that. I read somewhere that the 14's rims are wider than most bikes that use a 190, just so that you could fit a 200 on them without issue. In which case (if true) it shouldnt have any out of shape issues like curling up.

And I havent had any issues with traction in the corners, even with the stock tires. I was pretty surprised by that, honestly. The tires do start to slide when I'm pushing them hard, but its predictable and recatches without too much drama. Freaks out whoever is behind me though. Anything less than full lean in a tighter corner and I dont even get that slide.

The 180 turn over faster . and you get more tire to the ground .

the 180 tire gives the zx14 a wider footprint when vertical, true. But for that to be true, there has to be a trade-off in the size of the footprint when leaned over. a 6" rim is mightly big for a 180. A better cornering setup would be a 180 with a 5.5" rim I bet, though again, with my heft plus that of the porky 14, I need more rubber on the road when I'm at full lean.

Anybody have any ideas besides a stickier/ lower mileage tire?

Yeah, I'm a Pilot Power fan, too. At least since they discontinued the D208's I used to love. The D208's had crappy feedback but they held liked raped apes. Pilot Powers had massively better feedback but slightly less grip. I'm talking about cornering, of course. Drag strip use I'm not familiar with enough on a bike to know.

I corner as well, I ran powers on my 10 and did track days. Very good feed back and very controalable power slides with knee puck dragging in the corners! Also ran them on my sv 650 track bikes.

Oh yeah, those SV650's where meant for track days! It's like a big brother to the 250 Ninja, with all the power (relatively speaking of course) the 250 lacks. I honestly wish I was smaller framed enough to justify owning one, because I would in a heartbeat!
