Do yourself a huge favor... pick up a Klein!!! No kidding. We pulled the flies on two ZX14's, side by side, no heat and No Problems whatsoever!!! Superman T just pulled his too, he also used the 11" Klein.
If you strip the head on one of those screws using a cheap, standard driver, you'll be wishing that you spent the $8. Honestly!

Buy one of the telescopic pen magnets when you're at lowes. Just slide it down the shank of the driver when the screws are just about out... and you'll finally be rid of those pesky flies & screws forever, lol.

First off as was said get a GOOD number 2 - 10 or 11" screwdriver, Snap-On, Mac, Klein, Wiha, will all be good. I also had a second cheap or old screwdriver used to heat the screws to melt the Loc-tite. I simply heated the old driver to cherry red, then pressed it on to the screw for 20 seconds or so. Then use the good driver and using firm downward pressure turn until it breaks free. At that point you are home free. A parts magnet will help get the screw out and a piece of bent wire will hook the plate for easy removal. The golden rule is to not be in a hurry and it will be an easy job.

Make certain you do not angle the screwdriver as this will quickly strip the screw head, they are very soft!

Just came from Lowes, no such beast as an 11 inch Klein #2, 7 inch was the longest they had.

Lowes online only has the 7-inch as well, item # 603-7.

Will a Cobalt (Lowes brand) #2 do?

Thanks Qwick, I have a nice set of jap standard drivers i will use one of those..Stupid question i have seen a few comments on using a soldering iron to warm the screws before removal ?

A soldering iron will gaurantee success. Without one if your good with a screwdriver and patient you might be okay...then again you may have probs. The extra time the soldering iron takes is WELL worth it
If you have an 08 I've heard the fly removal doesn't do as much, but on 06-07's if you have a pc and good mapping the difference will blow your mind Throw some exhausts and a good filter in the equation and its just plain sick

I got my 06 two weeks ago today- I put in the PC3& tre (with maps) and its not what I expected. It's still asleep. I noticed no one has put their flies BACK IN? I think it's time to go to Lowe's for a good screwdriver.

Yo,

I just did the 'Heatless Flie Removal".

I got the SEVEN inch (not 11) Klein #2. It's shaft is 7 inches and handle 3.5, I guess that's where they get the 11 inch from. Lowes sells the 7-inch #3 Klein for like 7 bucks.

Prop the tank up with custom 2x4.
Pull one cover at a time.
Make sure the flies are closed.
Place screwdriver tip on screw making sure screwdriver is straight.
Put downward pressure with one hand and rest second forearm on frame/airbox.
With second hand just CRACK the screw open, takes minimal effort, yet sturdy effort.
Keep 'cracking' the screw about 5 degree's (1/8 inch).
GO SLOW
Eventually the screw rotation speeds up and can be removed with one hand.
Slide 4 dollar magnetic extension thingy (at lowes, near magent section) down to catch screw.
Rince and repeat for the remaining screws.

The screws are held in with regular 'ol Blue Loctite, nothing space age as article mentioned. Blue loctite is used to stop a screw from un-threading itself out. Thsi means that you'll need steady pressure to unscrew the screw for about 90% of it's theading. After that it comes right out.

Red Loctite is used to almost ensure the screw will never be removed, it's a bitch.

I found removing my flies to be slow but easily down if you dont use jerky snapping motions. That's the one that'll strip your head.

I just did Flies Out, Muzzy M14/M10, PC-III USB and BMC Filter last night. I notice a markable increase in performance but I can't tell you what impact 'just' flies' would have had.

The tre gives you about half of what flies out with a good map will give you. Plus the flies out starts giving you power right off idle.....not 3500 rpm like the tre. I used a tre on my stock 14 for a few months before I pulled the flies......no comparison The trick is you need a good flies out map for the best performance.

You get the hardest hitting low and midrange effect with the flies out and stock header. The stock header is designed for all around power...you run some race cans and the flies out and the low/midrange should hit like the hulk. When you run a 4 into 1 system you lose some of your low and midrange hit so the flies out won't be quite as dramatic. But if your bikes a first gen 14 it should still make a HUGE difference in your low end power. If its an 08 probably not so much.

I was ready to remove them (gas tank propped up) and then remembered that gas was $4 @ gal. I pussed out and put it all back together with the new Alien head and PC. How much MPG's will I lose. Is it really noticible?
I don't want a pussycat either.
Thanks for the repost .

I do not think removing the flies will effect gas mileage at all.

I thinky our wrist will effect gas consumption more.

Let me get this straight now---

You're riding the fastest, most powerful bike on the planet...and you're concerned about spending a few extra pennies for gas for a (no-cost) mod that would give you way more power than your Alienhead exhaust, which I'm sure you spent a pretty penny for...?? Did I get that about right or am I missing something here? What -- did you buy the exhaust just to make more noise or just to look cool?

Maybe you should trade your beloved ZX14 in for something like this and save a real bundle...

Nice to revisit on this. One of my club members test rode my bike to see if he would like it. Long story short, my bike stretched the tendons in his knuckles so he bought a 14 himslef about a week later. The guy he bought it from was more into cosmetics than performance. The first thing I asked the guy was were the fies out. He didn't even know what they were. Well getting to the point...I've ridden my member's 14 and I can DEFINITELY say I notice the difference in the whole flies in/flies out thing now. While his bike is fast, it takes a minute to kick in. My bike will put you in the Superman position as soon as you open it up. I don't see why ANYONE would debate pulling their flies. If you are uncertain about releasing your bike's full potential you have bought the wrong bike. I mean really...

PULL THEM OUT!!!!!!

I have a Muzzy Full Exhaust, PCIII, and yanked the flies, bike had 500 miles. I downloaded maps from Dynojet and Muzzy's, went a lil better, but not real impressed.
A member on one of the forums had same combo and emailed his custom dyno'd tune.
HOLY %#$&!!!!!
Had to go home to change my shorts after the first intersection I made my usual right turn and proceeded into an IMPROMPTU Power slide, which got thumbs up from vehicles at the intersection, only cause they couldn't see my eyeballs popping out or the stains in my shorts!!!!!!

Just Pullem out and hang on!!!!

Pull the flies and install a PC3! I was one of the idiots who purchase a TRE 008 and rode that way for a while not realizing that the engine may or may not be running lean so I removed it. While the low end performance is improved with the TRE it is NOTHING compared to pulling the flies and remapping. So in case you missed it ...PULL THE FLIES, INSTALL A PC3 AND HOLD ON. Don't forget to recalibrate your throttle with the new map. And by the way I haven't noticed any reduction in MPG. But I hammer the throttle everywhere I go.

Does anyone know where the best place is to find a cheap pc3...Apparently this free mod is going to cost me 350 bucks. The cheapest I have found has been 58cycles @ $274.95. Also, I like the fact that my bike is "controllable" at low rpms, does flies out change that?

If you purchase your pciii from HPC ( www.hyperbikecenters.com ) they will provide a map with it for free. It would be worth the extra cost if you can't find the right map.
