2007 Catalytic Converter

How thick is the honeycomb material and what is it made of??

I am wanting to clear my pipes out, but don't know if this is something that will turn into a nightmare.

Does the removal of the catalytic converter cause the bike to run lean?? Will the removal adversely affect the bike in any manner?? What does the removal of the cat do for the sound of the bike? Anyone with a video clip of the bike running with stock pipes with the cats removed??

I am doing the mod because I can't justify to the ol' lady why I need a new exhaust on a brand new bike.......

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Fifth, Not sure how you're going to get the cats out without destroying the pipes. I once had the same thoughts of removing them myself. Then I started on building a set of homemade pipes by using the stock 14 mid-pipes. Turned out great and I ended up with a unique look & sound, with very little money invested in them. I also put the stock pipes on a band saw and dissected them.

So, after seeing the internals of the stockers myself, I would say to steer clear from that idea. But you could use the stock mid-pipes and build yourself an inexpensive slip-on kit. I chose a low mounted drag pipe look myself and really liked it. It wouldn't be hard to do and it wouldn't cost much if you can find two can style mufflers and have them mounted up to your stock mid-pipes. Run them for a full season which will give you time to save up some money for an aftermarket system or until you find the one you really want. I waited 16 months, then Brock finally built one... just for me, lol.

Send me a pm if you have any questions on putting together your own pipes. I'd be more than happy to try to help you.

Good luck.

Hello Mr. Fifth I had a spare stock 06 pipe that I took apart. To make a long story short it can be done depending on your determination. The cat portion is a honeycomb metal wrap coated with the cat material. It is a bastard to remove at least for me requiring a combination of drilling and beating with a drift. Once the material is removed there is a spark arrester plate that can be pounded out. After this is done you must have the pipe welded back together. I didn't do that but temporary taped it and ran it at idle and didn't notice much difference in sound. Anyway these pipes are made solid and should last forever partly because of emissions mandate that emissions equipment must last I don't really know the specs. If you want some pics let me know. I just decided that the cats didn't bother me that much. The better approach might be some slip ons.

Kaw now, Determination yes, but patience has its limitations, lol. My cans became damaged beyond use while trying to removed the internals (lol) so that caused me to move onto step 2... build my own pipes.

Smokin has made a great offer with his pipes, so I'd take him up on it. Lee, Fifth will probably just need the mid-pipes (cut off at the cans). Will make shipping a lot easier and cheaper too. Now we need to just find him a set of good used aftermarket cans that someone is willing to sell him at a fair price. Anyone???

Jesus christ, it was a joke. I snagged kevin's pipes and a couple of other misc parts from him when he got the new short meg.The epitome of a STAND UP GUY. It's not every day that you meet someone as eager to help others as he is.

Thanks Chad. I've had the pleasure of getting to know several of the members here on the site who have been more than helpful to me in the past and I'm a firm believer in "passing it on".

I'll definetly do the same the first chance that i get. I wonder if a baffle buster would work on the stock pipes. Could possibly be an option. That's what a lot of the 109 guys are doing to their bikes since there are only a couple of pipes that make more power and they don't want to waste their money on pipes like the cobras or sideburners.
