Regular vs high octane pump gas

Hey guys, I remember reading somewhere that high octane pump gas is a "power robber". Could anyone explain to me the truth, if any, about this statement? I appreciate all of your input.

Yepp the lower the octane you can safely run the more power you will make. That is the skinny of it

what about high comp engines...say 14:1. Wouldn't you want a higher octane fuel?

Ok, I know it has been discussed here 1million times....but can I run 87 Octane in my 07 ZX14 with 4 deg advance and Full Exhaust? I have always used 91.

The key phrase is..."what you can get away with". You can run lower octane and not have any problems but if you want to start advancing the timing i would not run 87 on 4+ deg. I had mine tuned on 89 but that was on a dyno and not just putting a random map in my pc3. I would suggest having the bike tuned on the least amount of octane you can, or just spend the money and put 92 in it....better to spend a few extra bucks than money on a burnt piston.

pump fuel octanes rarely are exactly what they advertise.... so one 87 might actually be 84 , the other 89.

if it detonates, get higher grade fuel, and for lord sakes, don't load the motor until the ping goes away.

Also, you tend to get what you pay for. Don't skimp out and get your gas from the cheapest place in town- like a 7/11 or AM/PM. I'm an ex- car guy, and I always battled the knock demon with my high compression/large cam motors. I found that Texaco and Shell were the most reliable in there octane ratings.

BUT: pick the busiest gas station you can. I always had issues with knocking and water in the gas from statiions that had little volume of traffic. There gas sits in there tanks longer, accumilating more condensation/ ground water contamination along with the natural drop in octane that all gas goes through from sitting.

There is a reason they sell those little bottles you're supposed to put into your vehicles that arent going to drive for awhile. They both keep the fuel from gumming up in your carbs, retain your octane rating, and keep the gas from turning to a form of varnish in the tank. Well, if your gas is coming from a station where the high octane only gets refilled every 3 or 4 months, same problems occur.

One more thing: NEVER EVER buy pump gas that has been "oxygenated" if you can help it. I've covered it a few times before here, you lose power. ALOT of power, and an equal amount of gas mileage. AM/PM gas for example, is nationwide oxygenated. Texaco and Shell (same company) are a hit and miss. If the refinery that supplies the gas also serves even one area that requires it -or gives a tax break to them for using it- then ALL there gas is oxygenated. Also, it's hit and miss on the signs on the pump. You have to ask the clerk, who might or might not know.

Side note: CostCo gas is by far the best bargain. It's AM/PM cheap, and they use the "Premium fuel additive package" from Texaco for ALL there octane gas. (I have an inside source at a local Texaco refinery )

I have always purchased gas at Costco 87 octane with no pinging in my 14..Runs great but as sticks says some stations buy fuel every other month or so and its shitty gas..Costco uses 400.000.00 gallons a weekend at some locations and me being in a remote area i buy 30 gallons at a time in cans and run it in my bikes with no problems..Dont know if it's true or not but somewhere i read that if you keep your fuel in a race bottle or metal can it keeps out the UV and last longer or i should say the octane stays high without adverse effect of its rating..Also my Brother who has been a car mechanic for 30 years says, He sees plugged up filters from mixing Oxygenated fuels with standard fuels causes a gumming effect of the filters so stay away from that shit..
