This drag racing is not easy

I tried my luck with it last night and have to admit that I need a LOT of practice. I am telling myself to twist the throttle open at 5000 rpm when the clutch goes in, but I guess I get chicken shit and dont ever do it. So, 60footers are no better than 1.8 and ETs are 10.10 at 141. I backed these up 4 times. Stock tire at 20 psi, lowered 1.5 inches front and rear, no strap, extended 6.5 inches, stock gearing, with Alien Head and PC, and I weigh 205lbs.
I had fun and got to run an 08 Busa with the same mods but not ext. and he could 60 ft 1 tenth better than me but 5 hundredths and 3mph slower. Our 330, 1/8, and 1000 ft are 2 1/100s of each other with him being better but the 14 gets it done after 1/8 mile. He weighed 7 pounds more than I do. (Not the guy I was to run last month btw) This isnt about 14 vs Busa but I do see these bikes being even and the racing will be closer than ever before(same song, I know).
Being a few months from 40yrs old, sleeping at the light is embarrasing as hell. A guy asked me if I got my taxes done sitting there LOL. Having not done this stuff in 5 yrs has made me look bad to all my riding buddies who remember the old days when we were all faster. It may not be true but thats how we want to remember it.
I'm a roadrace/trackday guy but I believe I can get into this dragging big time too. Getting that 60 ft down to 1.6 and running some 9.7's are there, I can smell it.
Dont tell me.. U soft, strap, and gearing. OK, I 'll get that done this week.

LOVE THE TITLE!!!

It's NOT easy, but it IS fun!!!
Too many people think that it's simpler than it is.

No matter how many videos I watch (of Wheelie or smokinzx14), my mind knows WHAT to do, but getting my body to do it is a whole 'nother thing!

It's been nearly a month since I was at the strip for the "first" time.
I have to get back and practice some more before I forget everything Wheelie told me to do .................

kawasakijockey, 1.60's are your next goal, then 1.50's, and finally 1.40's, at 6.5 over it will seem easy once you are there, and dont forget the airshifter.

Lucky, if I lay off a couple of weeks it takes me 2 or more passes to get the good 60', warm weather is just a week or so away here in Texas, if you want low 6's with your setup you will have to race every weekend till you get it, its all about getting on the track and learning your bike and honing your skillz!

+1

i took my ZX14 out to the drag strip 3 times, and was humbled at how difficult drag racing really is. It would take me a lot of practice to learn to launch decent.

Seems much easier for me to "drag" a knee puck fast around a track with turns, drag racing requires skills!

I would have to disagree here. I think it makes sense that if you look at it, the same dragracers seem to win year after year even though new guys are showin up with faster and faster bikes. I have done both and the difference for me is that drag racing does not allow you to settle into a rythym like road racing does, you dont get the oppurtunity to make 45 passes in a row where as you make conitinous laps in road racing. I think both take A LOT OF SKILL but drag racing takes that certain something else to be great at...

This is a silly premise with a conclusion that has no merit, IMHO.

Different skills - yes. Takes more skills - NOOOOOOOO!

Sooooooo. On a PRO level, does golfing take more skills or does boxing? Basically, the same argument, with no possibility of a fair and accurate conclusion.

I have done both! Raced circuit for a year and dragged my entire life! Circuit racing is having balls, a good suspension tuner, and getting your rythm down in and out of corners and trusting tires, Drag racing. Good lord you have a lot that comes into play and at any instant, you may have to change your entire set up as well as riding style. The light can even throw you for a loop. Track hook good, lauch hard. Track spinning. ease up a tad! Weather, bike runs different and you have a million things to do in such a short time with a lot of power pushing you to thing a million miles an hr. Drag is extremely harder! I'll tell you what, try taking a corner faster. Then try and 60 foot better. See which one scares you the most. it's something about flipping a bike backwards that makes some people nutt up!
