gutted cans and single exhaust?

Anyone gutted their cans and 'created a single exhaust? I'm contemplating an inexpensive alternative. I'll be returning my bike to stock when I get back in November. I was just curious if the the alternative to having it cut/welded locally is worth the headache OR should I just get a single slip on?

Thanks for the assist.

I was contemplating something similar and even cut and tore apart removed the cat on a damaged can that I have. The problem with that is it is flowed for half of the engine and it doesn't look practical for modding for full exhaust flow. However I was thinking about taking the stock head pipe and seeing if someone could cut the dual splitter off aft of the collector and running a tapered pipe to the stock rear right mid pipe to the muffler that I cut off. From that point you could possibly find a single can from someones big bore bike aftermarket header. Maybe find one off ebay. It could work but the trouble and expense of the lining up and welding to the stock head pipe might not be worth it. You still could gut out the stock pipe but it would probably run like and sound like shit.

There is a local racer around here that did that. He essentially closed off the left side port of the exhaust and completely gutted the left canister (he hides a nitrous bottle and solenoid in it) and removed the cats from the right side. I do not know how it affected power but it is an awesome sleeper setup to spray a 30 or 40 shot through in the street. and the bike looks COMPLETELY stock you CANNOT find the nitrous bottle it is great

Mike--just considering it right now. I'm wanting a new truck when I get back & I'm still gonna keep all the stuff I need so I can run at the texas mile. Swingarm, shifter, smeg conversion, shiftlight, Brock Gen3 and a few more bits and pieces will go, probablly the trailer too. I really want to put a fat wad on this truck.

I just cant go back to a dual exhaust. I HATE the left can.... I also can't see selling my Gen3 (& Smeg conversion) for close to what it will cost me to put slip ons. I'm still thinking out loud.

Kaw NOw, thats kinda what I was thinking. Its gotta look perfect though, or I will ditch the entire concept. I really love the sound that comes from the heavy stock headers(kinda like the zx12 with a slip-on yosh RS-3....that is the sweetest sound I have ever heard!)

BTW, nothing is for sale anytime soon.

thanks.

Yes sir, it can be done inexpensively.A buddy of mine had the left side cut at the bubble and welded shut. He has drilled the right canister out some ,bike sounds like he has a Muzzy on it .He had a local welding shop do the welding for 20 bucks. We will be riding saturday or sunday to Memphis motorsport or Holly Springs Raceway,i will be able to tell you how it ran.The bike has 16/42s ,no flies and pcIII.

We prototyped essentially a cap for the left outlet on the collector and ran a single slip-on. It produced on or two hp less than a dual slip-on. So you don't "lose" hp per say over the stock dual mufflers. You just don't gain as much.

We were considering offering it as a kit. Just never went forward with it. If you want to be the first consumer to try it, we'll make you an extra special Bikeland deal.

I wouldn't be able to test it until November anyway. Thanks for the offer though.

If it don't work, I'll be running straight headers.

Isn't that what Corona Suzuki were doing with the GSX-R1000 in World Superbikes? The left hand silencer was for show only, so that it still resembled the showroom model.

Along with others as well... In racing, it's one of the worst kept "secrets" dating back to the late 70's when we all blatently cheated in Superbike. But not me.....

Well my buddy tested the bike with the single stock exhaust ,pcIII,flies out and 16/42s.I watched as the bike left smoking the tire and fish tailing .He has a big smile on his face.Says it felt alot stronger. I actually thought it would lose bhp.
