Smokins 2008 zx10 Vs 2006 zx14
Lets start with the day , 80 Deg and 80% humidity ..It's the type day that makes it hard to get out of your leathers because all the sweating ... Track was BMP 1/4 mile track for Runday Sunday 9:00 to 5:00 with close to 300 cars and bikes..It was a tuff day with 2 cars oiling down the track and two car smacking the wall and hours on hours waiting for them to clean up the track ..Steddyteddy and myself where only able to get 5 runs in all day ...Sounds like fun doesn't it .....Trust me it wasn't ..
The bike ... 2008 zx14 29 miles on the speedo ,The only mods were lowered and strapped ...Modded the same way i first run my 2006 zx14 two years ago ..More on that later .. Here comes shot right to my big head letting the air out of my Ego ...My first pass off the trailer was 9.96 @ 142 .96 with and Ego crushing 1.75 60 footer ....Well at least i ran a 9 second pass and not a 10 second pass ...That was hard to take because for the last two years on my zx14 8.80 were easy and normal ....But this zx10 at stock wheel base is a hand full to say the least ...The zx10 make sick sick power from 8000 RPMs to 13000 RPM ...This thing hits like cannon on the top end but the bottom end is weak and sickly Vs the zx14 ...The problem i was having was on me and not the bike , you have to completely relearn to ride this zx10 coming off a zx14 ..In my 5 runs i never got better than a 1.73 60 footer ... wheelies and bogging the motor were the norm ...I just could not find what would work to get this thing out of the hole ... My second pass was really funny , As i shifted from first to second gear i hit the horn button 3 times before i remembered i didn't have and air shifter !!!! lol..No matter what i tried i just got worse with every pass . The good new is once you get this zx10 moving it really hauls butt ..
So i really felt unskilled ass wipe not being able to go fast on a fast bike .....on the way home i started to think back two years to the first time at the track on my zx14 with the very same mods ...Just like the zx10 i had nothing but lowering links and front end strap ...I had to go back to the very first pages on bikeland to find my numbers ... My best 1/8 mile numbers for my zx14 were First run >> 1.79 60 foot 1/8 mile 6.60 @ 107 ... second pass was Second run> 1.69 60 foot 6.56@ 114.67.... My numbers today on the zx10 in the 1/8 mile were 6.57 @ 116 with a 1.75 60 foot .....As you can see they are about dead even !!!
My first trip 2 years ago to the 1/4 mile with my zx14 were 60 foot 1.72
330 4.356
1/8 6.46 @116.64
1000 feet 8.28
1/4 mile 9.82 @ 145.37
That first pass was a little quicker on the zx14 than my pass today on my zx10 but i had added a Muzzy pipe to the zx14 .. So it realy wasn't mod to mod test because of the added pipe ... So it looks to me that these two bikes are very close in stock trim ...
In the end my zx14 at stock wheel base did run a 9.18 @ 152 MPH but only after many many passes down the track as well as changing to a brocks pipe and map ...The seat time was the key to making the zx14 go fast ...I do feel the zx10 will match my zx14 times but just like my zx14 it will take a lot more seat time to get it done ... Smokin, how were you launching the ZX 10, were you launching at like 7500 and sliding the clutch?
I would imagine that the lack of lowend power and tall gearing would neccessitate a completely different technique than the 14...............I never actually rode a 1000 but i've watched and raced a few and they look like they launch kinda like a a 250 2 stroke MXer.

I'm just not sliding the clutch like it needs ..I have been tossing my zx14 clutch at 5000 for so long it has become a habit ....I tried 7500 but just went 12:00 , you can see the start of that wheely in the picture i just posted ..lol... What the bike needs just like my 05 zx10 needed is some lower gears ...I wasn't getting out of first till 100 MPH !!! That's just to damn tall for drag racing ... Like i said i will just have to learn to side the clutch .. I was getting pretty good on my 05 zx14 ( 6.20 @ 120 ) But i had to have the zx14 so i traded it in before i good really good on it ...Smokin..

Thats what I figured, I just just toss the clutch on my 14 also at between 4000-5000 but i know that wouldnt work on a small bike. what are you gonna try with gearing, one down in the front and one up in the back ?

Sorry, i guess my post wasnt very clear, i assumed that you were tossing the clutch like we do on the 14.................i was really ASKING if you think sliding the clutch at 7500 will work on the 10. since the smaller bikes with less lowend and tall gearing seem to like that technique more than the quick toss of the clutch and WOT.

Those 10's sure are wheelie machines though, at the strip i go to theres a couple of hotdogs that run 10.7's-10.8's riding wheelies down the entire strip and thats at like 4000 feet.

I was able to beat Lee today! I have a feeling he will start cutting those times down this Wednesday night at Sunshine. Won't have to wait 2 hours between runs and neither of us have been riding good at Bradenton for a while now. Lee since you back on a short bike and Jessie is going short I'm taking mine back to 64". I ran my best 1/4 mile at that length and haven't been able to touch it with all the mods since. Came close yesterday but my 60's suck.

Good post Smokin.
The MPH is in the hunt so the power to weight ratio is right there.
I knew this bike was going to be fast with all the technical changes.
I think you would agree, arm and lower gearing probably would be the best 2nd choice for mods after lowering ...
Hard to put stock power down already... LOL
