Welding a motor
Hey guys,
Is it possible to weld a motor? This is an 06 R1 motor for a friend of mine. LOL HE wanted to be Mr. Master Tech and install his own chain......well he didnt crimp the master link and after $3000 worth of repairs the bike threw the chain (On the first test ride after nearly six months down) and busted a hole in the top part of the bottom crank case right in front of the front sprocket.
PRICELESS I know!!!!!!!!!!!! So is it possible to fill in the hole with weld or put a patch plate and weld it to the block. Also, would he have to take the whole motor apart or just drain the oil and remove the oil pan to get the debris out.?
I know this has nothing to do with a 14, but most guys on here visit this forum. So I'm mostlikely to get an answer on here rather than the r1 forum.
Thanks

The cases can be welded but he will most likely have to tear the motor all the down.

JB weld makes a good temporary fix, and maybe.... a permanant one for cracks, but not use it for a hole that large.
He's lucky he never lost his leg!
I saw a chain come off, whip around a guys leg and then continue to be pulled throught the countershaft sproket with half his calf.
One way to skin a cat! LOL
Hebron torch, do a search.
I bought a CR500 wich had the case cracked, I had it welded by a dood who welds aircraft frames. He also could weld up aluminum radiators which most places WILL NOT touch.
If you find a good welder it can be done, as long as it did not crack any machined surfaces should be as easy as welding a plate over the hole.
Make sure you clean and prep the surface really well. Brake clean, and emery cloth, remove all grease and paint.
If you bring them a dirty engine a cranky welder may just zap it with out prep out of anymosity.

Another vote for JB weld.
If the spot on the cases is not under the oil level it should hold up just fine.
