Test riding my bike that's for sale?

What do you all think about someone just wanting to take it around the block to go through the gears?

It weirds me out, but how else would I get them to understand it's ok? Go through the gears on the bike stands??

Give me your opinions please.

When they hand you the cash, they can take it for a ride.
If they are not satisfied, and the bike is unscathed, they can have their money back.
Serious guys will have a cert. cheque or cash in hand.

No test pilots.
End of story.

Only 1 other person has rode my bike, and his was a brand new shiny zx14, which would have become mine if he dumped my ride

Uhh get a deposit first..If someone really wants to buy your bike get a deposit and check there insurance or make sure your insurance knows you are selling and some people will test ride it..Some companys wont cover someone else riding your bike and you could find yourself in court trying to recover your money..And if you live in a state that requires a motorcycle endorsment check there license. I was selling a GSX1000G and i learned the hard way..Was crashed during a test ride..Only got what the bike was valued at depreciation..Came out to half retail value and took 6 months to get any money..

My opinion? No way in hell unless you are riding next to them, they have a valid license (for at LEAST 2 years), and they show proof they will/can buy it.

I lost my first bike that way. A friend's cousin wanted to 'test ride' it. I followed him out on a test loop (he claimed he wanted to hit the freeway to see how it did). During the ride it started raining really hard, and the Ninja he was riding had track tires on it, so we stopped at my friends house. I had to leave that bike there and go to work, and the friend insisted I leave the keys so his dad could move the bike if his car wouldnt fit in the garage. Didnt want to, but did...

Apparently as soon as I left, while still raining, the 'cousin' took the keys and bike. Never heard from him again.

Turns out my so-called friend had met the guy a couple months ago, but since he was so cool agreed to tell me it was his cousin visiting him so I would let him ride the bike. Didnt know where he came from, and his supposed apartment was actually someone else's who was subrenting a room to him for a month. That guy also got ripped off of everything in his place when the thief left.

I beat that SOB to a bloody pulp for lying to me (even after I found the bike gone the idiot kept making up shit to keep me from reporting the theft/making him look bad). But beating him didnt make the loss any easier, not one bit. He learned a very valuable lesson, though. lol

I just sold my '02 TL1000R, and the guy who bought it wanted a test ride. Well, he pulled up on a fairly clean Honda Blackbird. When he asked if he could take it for a spin to "make sure everything worked" I said sure, but hold on a sec.

I rolled my 14 over next to his 'bird and said, "yep, they would look good together in my garage." He was smart enough to know what I meant and agreed to it.

THAT'S an seldom said but assumed rule: you wreck someone else's bike, they ride yours until you fix or replace there's.

Checks can be canceled; I would instruct them to bring CASH for the full cost of the bike if they want to test drive. Then, type up a quick letter stating that if any damage occurs to the bike during the test ride then he forfeits his cash and has BOUGHT the bike and make that person sign it. Also, take pictures (if you have a digital camera) of the guy next to the bike showing the bikes condition at the time of the ride and have him initial on the note that these pictures were taken before the test ride and that he accepts responsibility if the bike is damaged for any reason regardless of fault. Lastly, jot down his license number and address information (since you cannot hold onto his license if he is going for a ride). Have a few copies of the agreement and the serious buyers would not blink at these requirements. Only the tire kickers might give you issues and you don't want to be bothered by them anyway. All this should only take 10 minutes or less, and a test ride is a QUICK way to sell a bike.

Just called the guy. I told him I don't like the idea of anyone riding it w/out me having money in hand. So...he is presenting me a cashiers check this Sunday, I will cash it monday and WHEN it clears he will do it. So it's all good now. He didn't take offense and was cool about it all. I think this will be a good, friendly, clean deal.

I look at it like this, most dealerships won't let you test ride a bike at the dealer so treat your bike as such.

Discretion is the better part of valor....no money, no ride ! Sell the bike first on paper and receive the cash. This will relieve you of all liability. Just cash in hand and no signed bill of sale, you're leaving the door open for a law suit in the event of an accident or drop. That way you can tell them to keep on riding if they like the bike and you go about your life with a new stack of money.

FYI--- Just some info I've been told. If you ever want to 'just type something up', there is a good chance it will not hold up in court. It has little value unless it is written up by an unbiased 3rd party. Courts look at the document as biased, one-sided which would always benifit the person who wrote it. I'm not saying it that it wont hold up in court, I'm just saying its a 'loophole' that can be manipulated. Its always best to use a 3rd party document, a proven well versed, and commonly used document. i.e. Would you write up your own contract to rent/lease your house out? Hellz NO, you'd never get the fuggers out of your house if they stopped paying.

Its really up to you, usually by talking to the guy thats looking at it, you can tell what kind of guy he is. If you tend to trust people more than I do, just make sure they have a motorcycle endorsement and hold their license while they test drive it, but I would have to say if it were up to me I probably wouldn't let them on it. That is just because I have been screwed over a few times in the past and I am more than careful. One thing to consider tho, by not let them take it for a spin it could cost you the sale. You make the call.

He's some Grad student at Ohio State University who wants to buy it for his g/f so she'll have a ride to go down to Daytona Bikeweek. He said he wanted to make it his track bike, but she was drooling over the pictures I guess and wanted it.

So you Florida boys may see it!

Shoot, just remembered another incident when I was selling a bike. A co-worker wanted to buy my 250 Ninja, but had never ridden a street bike, but "claimed" to have won a bunch of trophies riding dirt bikes, and supposedly had a street legal enduro...

Yep, I let him ride it. in a nearly empty parking lot, pointed him away from the 3 cars in the lot and drilled him on how to ride it. And he then somehow managed to pop a wheelie from a dead stop, slam it down, slide the front tire into a 360 degree footpeg scraping turn, then, full throttle right back at me! I jumped aside just as he grabbed the brakes (but he was still hitting the gas) and then I heard that oh so familiar crashing thud of a vehicle on vehicle crash...

He friggin ran MY OWN BIKE into MY CAR!!! In a empty parking lot!

Yeah, it was pretty damn funny to everyone else who was watching, too. He didn't even buy the bike... but he paid for both to get fixed.

Yeah, I thought I was the shit when I was 18. Had a newer cool car, 2 sport bikes, and all the pizza and tax free tip money I could eat! Then in one fell swoop, he took out both driveable vehicles I had... ended up driving the moms minivan to work... jeez, the humiliation...
