Anybody Tried 17-44 Gearing for Drag Racing
I weigh about 185 pounds and was wondering if anybody has ever used 17-44 gearing and how it worked out for them.

Nope have not tried that one but I am running 16/43 and it works great for me! I am 5'9" and about 130lbs but my boy clean is running the same gearing and turning 6.0s and he is almost 300 pounds. Now Clean is still in the learners box but every now and then, he lets his nuts hang low and good lord he flies!

With it that long, don't you have problems spinning on the street ? I can see needing to be over 64" without some serious engine work. I get high 1.3s low 1.4s 60ft at 62.5".

I dig the 17/45 only because I don't like the "wound up" feeling I get on the 16t. I've tried several combos, this one is the best for me.
9 in. Stretch.

i'm with lietome...............i think the 17/45 or 16/42 ratio which are essentially the same are perfect for both street and strip.

I ran 5.90s at stock wheelbase with 16/40. The 40T pulled the wheel back a little farther and allowed me to leave harder. ( 172 lbs.) I'm 4" over now with 16/41.

I would go either 16/42 or 17/45 if you dont mind replacing the chain..............i'm 160 with a stock chasis and i've been running 16/42 since the i had 50 miles on the bike, Lietome is running 17/45 which is essentially the same ratio but requires a new chain, and he loves it as well.
With the 16/42 it will be a lot snappier and lift the front wheel easier but still cruise nice on the highway without being to buzzy or busy..........i think its the perfect ratio!

I just cant believe no one has stated that when you run 17/4?? whatever you are intentionally making your chain longer which we all no longer chain =more rotating resistance may not be a lot but why add more when you can accomplish the same gear ratio and wheelbase with a shorter length chain. just food for thought

BlackMagic, i did state that he would need a new/longer chain to run 17/45 gearing............however i didnt think the increased rotating resistance merited mentioning since i figured it would likely be canceled out by the decreased rotating resistance and increased chainlife from running larger sprockets.........i assumed they were small changes that would cancel each other out!

I would tend to agree with Black Magic, at 240 with a 5 inch extension i would probably go 16/43...........the only caveat is you will for sure need an extra shift in the quarter and might want to consider more gearing so you are at the top of 5th gear when you cross the traps.
