Kawasaki Recalls Over 4000 Concours14's for Saddlebag & Luggage Rack Defects

Turns out it's a good thing we were both wearing full leathers when we had this photo taken! We all knew something was up with the numerous reports in our forums at www.Concours14.com of Saddlebags falling off new Connie's. It appears as though Kawasaki is stepping up to the plate and doing something about it. Documents filed January 23rd of this year with the NHTSA detail the recall, and were forwarded to us by one of our members who's a C14 owner.

KMC is recalling over 4,400 Concours14's for problems with the Saddlebags falling off, as well as problems with the Rear Luggage Rack potentially breaking.

If you own one of these bikes, check your VIN # and contact your local Kawasaki dealer for more information.

The latch of the saddlebag(s) is subject to breakage if a large force is applied to the saddlebag (such as might happen if the motorcycle were to fall on its side even at a stand still) or to the latch (such as might happen if the operator tried to force the latch closed when the latching mechanism was not in the proper position). The broken latch may allow the saddlebag to separate from the motorcycle. If this were to occur in traffic, there is the risk of a crash and the possibility of injury or death.

Top Box / Rear Rack Recall

The rear carrier platform may not be strong enough to withstand the longitudinal forces associated with mounting and use of certain common accessories. The rear carrier consists of a frame with a plastic load carrying platform. While the platform is fully capable of carrying the recommended weight, it may not be strong enough to withstand the fore-and-aft longitudinal forces that might be associated with mounting of a "top box" to the platform, particularly if the top box is used as a backrest by a passenger. In such a situation, the platform could break, creating the potential for an accident leading to a serious injury or death.

Anyone know what the recall will do? Will they replace the plastic rear rack with an aluminum one?

No, I've heard it's a beefed up plastic one.
