Question for ZX14 owners
Have any of the ZX14 owners on this board had any 2nd gear issues or other tranny problems before with your 14? I am just curious.

Nope, maybe 1 out of all the 14's sold.
As you already know, this is a BIG ISSUE on Busas. Many threads talk about it on the Busa boards, and many, many people there (with pre-08's) have see the issue.
BTW, Suzuki officially calls it "abuse" or "rider error" and refuses to fix it.
My 02 from reading the boards - never owned a Busa..........................

You only need two tools: WD-40 and Duct Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.

I have been told by the guy that machined my tranny that the zx14 has a killer tranny from the factory. I have not heard anyone with a 14 complain about their tranny yet so far. That is a big plus in my book. I am considering an 08 something but I still have to do my research. It will be between the Busa and 14 though.

man for you to even consider a Kawi blows my mind. I thought for a long time you were a brainwashed one-brand fanatic with a closed mind!
I like both bikes this year :P

I never had any tranny issues on my 06 14 or clutch issues. Just the 1st gear clunk that could be heard 2 houses down.
Heres my experience with the Busa tranny, I've had an 02 with around 300 passes and an 03 with around 400 passes never had a tranny issue always foot shifted as well, My buddy had an 02 with 400 passes no problems either. My other buddy had an 05 and 2 nd gear was shot in 1000 miles and very few runs. He swears he never missed a gear and jammed it in. The dealer I worked at got it repaired under warranty no problem at all, he paid the extra money to have it under cut by fast by gast. alot of times when guys say suzuki won't take care of a problem it's not suzuki it's the dealer. out of all the Busa's we have sold over the years we only had 1 other one with a major problem and that was the starter kicking back, Suzuki fixed everthing no problems at all. The other common problem we seen almost all hayabusa come back with unless the guy was smart enough to do it on his own was after about 1000miles the Busa's idle needs to be turned up or they will die pulling in the clutch to stop. There are a few post on the hayabusa board about 2nd gear being gone but not that many and you gotta wonder if the guy missed a gear and jammed it in anyway, that will cause a problem I don't care what bike it's on. but then no one wants to say they did that. We have never had any of the 14s come back to the shop with any issues but then I'm the only one out of the 4 we have sold that race. Some guys swear the stock busa chain isn't safe for the street let alone the track but I always ran the stock chain. So all in all both bikes will have small issues I mean look how we ride them for the most part. Like I say we sell both Suzuki and Kawasaki and we don't see hardly any models come back with issues.

Good info! Seems that Kaw has the tranny nailed to a science. I remember when the old zx11 was notorious for the 2nd gear prob. If Zuk have not fixed it for the 08 model year I will just have to go agianst my wishes and convert to the dark side. I would rather buy a $300 dallor oil pan to lower a bike without busting the stock one than to have a bike I have to spend 2k in tranny work just because the manufacturer did not think a bullet proof tranny was need in a high performance machine with that much torge and weight.

It has been a big issue here with the busa's second gear. Granted all are raced and road hard some stk some not. I feel bad about it for my customers because suzuki won't fix them. I have found yet another solid peice on the 14s the clutchs,IMO one of the strongest clutches going. We are still doing 08 busa clutches on a regular bases. And yes its alot to do about the riders but the 14 guys are'nt any easier on them. Still in my opinion two of the best bikes on the market . bill...

I can remeber when the 14 first came out there were reports of alot of guys burning clutches up in 15 to 30 passes and I almost did not get a 14 because of that, but smoking said he never had any issues so I bought one and I never had any issues either.

No problems at all. My bikes not done as many runs as Smokin's but it must be 70 or 80 top speed runs at least, with 9 over 200mph and I was launching at 7,000rpm before I removed the 'flies.

i've seen the 14 tranny apart at r&d motorsports and the gears are huge, you look at the other trannies in there from busa and zx-12 and it dwarfs them. truly a solid setup. r&d tweeks them for all the top racers for optimum performance.

Alright, I have had a problem. Have had it 3 times now, when I drop down to 2nd it gets stuck in a false neutral with a gear crunching sound. First time it did it? was still breaking it in, was still babying it. other 2 times? Of course happened in the middle of passes. Once left me stuck facing oncoming traffic with no power, had to cram it down with a horrendous crunch to avoid a oncoming semi (was in third decided I needed second to clear the pass safely).
Now have 3,000 miles on it and dont want to trust that gear. Think I should take it in? Dont know, its a random thing with no other sounds associated. Seems to like to do it when Im downshifting for a pass- so tell the dealer to go for a pass and downshift? lol
