Round and round we go... Wheel bearing test

Well this is going to be costly test ... Ceramic wheel bearing 395.00 OH MY ......Lucky for me i got a set from a friend for a trade deal on some labor or i would have not done the test...

First on the list was to remove the old wheel bearing from my zx14 ...Pretty easy job with the help of an old wheel bearing puller tool that i have owner for 34 years...If you don't have a wheel bearing removal tool you better get one before trying this ..

Before i reinstall the bearings I spun the old ones Vs the new ones with my fingers and the ceramic bearings did turn much much easier that the factory steel ones ..That's a good sign..

I installed the rear first and with the chain in place and brakes back on i spun the wheel and it did turn much easier...

The front wheel was next , i spun the wheel without the brakes installed and the wheel never did stop turning ...I reinstalled the brakes and that really put the drag on ... The pads really make a ton of contact ....This is leading me to make another test after this test ..But lest see what i get out of the bearings first ..

I will be testing Weds night test and tune and i will post up any gains in ET or MPH ( if there are any )

The next test will be to remove ONE front rotor and caliper .....I don't like the idea of one brake on the front but it's a drag bike and i'm looking to go fast and not stop fast ....So i'll give it a try ........Smokin...

Thanks for sharing that about the bearings. I've heard so much either way about the difference can't be noticed all the way to reduced ET's.

You don't need that second rotor on your bike, you need a PARACHUTE

Smokin I am sure you know of this trick but I always pry my rear brake apart before a run, in case of emergency you just have to pump the pedal a few times to compress the pads and it seems to make a difference I am sure it doesnt shave a tenth but add that up with some wheel bearings and one front rotor some lightweight oil and a non oring chain and I am willing to bet that it helps a little and it cost nothing!

When I had my 12r, Johnny Cheese removed the dust rings in my front brakes and the wheel turned much easier and the brakes worked just as well. I believe it allowed the pads to return much easier was the idea.

OK OK i'm back !!!!! Long story made short .....I got NO gain in MPH or ET from the bearings ...Sorry guys for Drag racing i would NOT spend the money ...Maybe at Maxton or the TX mile you may gain some MPH ...I wish i could tell you it did pick up MPH and ET because i feel now that i wasted my time and money.... Sorry Guys ... Smokin ....

Did you put a ceramic bearing on the rear sprocket also?

You're right about the drag on the front brakes, though. When I wheel my 14 into the garage, I can hear those sumbitches!

Smokin, Did you ever come up with a solution to using the U-4.2 with it causing a small lost of MPH??? maybe due to the higher octane??

I'm curious about that too because I hate to have to drain the tank.

I switched back to 87 octane pump gas and the bike is running good numbers again .. I think the higher octane of the U4.2 was part of the problem..The other part was running to lean at high RPMs but even added extra fuel to the map didn't fix the lower MPH ..... I really would like to run MR9 again but the cost is just to high for the added 10th of a second gain....So for now i'll stick with the pump gas ... Smokin..

I have not be able to find the old U4 ...I think they stop making it ..... Old U4 is 92 or 93 octane , the new U4.2 is like 102 or 103 ... I pick up about a tenth on the old U4 Vs 87 pump gas ... I get a little more ET & MPH with MR9 Vs the old U4 but at 110.00 for 5 gallons that's not going to happen ... Smokin
