I think.... It burns at the same temp, BUT the lower the octane the faster the flame front moves across the piston, hence faster flame = more powerful explosion. BOOM

Is there any dangers of running 87 octane in these high compression engines, like the dreaded pre mature detonation.

Its safe. The lower octane the faster it burns.
Switch it up every now and then with 87, 89, or 93.

Yes there is, more so at low rpm's and large throttle openings. Stick with 91 0ctane and you will not have a problem. You will not feel much of a difference with 87 though it might give up a few more HP on the dyno. Want to go faster? How much do you weigh?

The factory has to worry about warranty work on a bike ridden by an idiot..............like uphill in 6th at 35MPH and 105* outside.

If you know how to ride a sportsbike then it's not a problem......revs are your friend.

"cnote", I'm surprise to hear you say that most racers use 87 octane. I don't think so because most racers have modified high compression engines which requires higher octane. Even a regular street bike with head work and compression bumped up can't use 87 octane or Mr9. Octane's too low. On a built out street bike, depending on the compression, u have too use 93 octane, minimum. Race engines definitely needs MRX1 or Race gas for the track. It's all about compression and what minimum octane it takes to keep engine from detonating.

I am in agreement with Fastest-14

However .....Take heed guys...

depending on where you live , but almost all winter fuels become degraded with oxygen additives, and butane which lower the flash point and octane,

The major fuel suppliers do this since it makes engines easier to start when cold, and they sell crap for the same $$$.

This situation will lead to detonation or pre ignition in winter months from fuel that ran good in the summer months. I have noticed this condition almost every September until May.

I have had to run 91+ octane rated fuel from september to may, when i could get away with 87 between June and August.

JFYI... and something to pay attention to......

I've used 87 in my ZX10 with a thin headgasket for raised compression and a little head work made 174 hp. I used it in my 14 and now my 08 Busa with no issues. All those bikes only ever use 87.
