NC, TN, and Deal's Gap Pics
The ZX14 and I had a great time at Deal's Gap. Unlike many told me, we had NO trouble with cops and we blistered the dragon more times than I can count. Also hit Cheroholla Skyway that GUNNER suggested. I held a pace with the locals that new the roads and they were baffled my ZX14 could keep up. I let them know I could get more corner speed from a smaller bike but the ZX14 has no probs in the turns. Two of the folks rode crotch rockets 18 hours from Long island, NY
After the tourist stuff above I went and rode twisties were I once lived around Hickory, Wilkesboro, Jefferson, Blowing Rock, etc. Wanted to make it to Mt Airy and places in Allegheny Co. but no time.
The point of the trip wasn't to take pics but we snapped a few and I thought I'd share.
Pics:
Unloaded at a spot I could see the stuff from my 2nd floor hotel room (and slept with window open!)

I rode a lift while playing tourist and waiting on others

The group at one point - (we met and changed folks several times along the way)

Extremely twisty roads and beauty combined, oh my !!!!

Curves? I couldn't get the bike lower, I didn't have my knee pucks/leathers (more "ride" pics when photographer gets them to me).

Us at dragon

Me and Lisa the Gixxer chick

Lisa and I at the tree of shame

Lisa

The trip was ALL about the ride but we did take breaks

Paula and I

Us bored outside waiting to eat at "No Way Jose" Mexican place

Great food and the beer/tequila was flowing, couldn't have been as good as my large coffee in a to go cup! This Floridian was freezing the whole trip, usual temp was 67 degrees, 35 at night

***Next pics I went solo to another part of NC and road extreme twisties.***
I arrived late at night in Hickory NC and the nice lady lets me leave my stuff guarded right in front of hotel! Little southern hospitality going on

Solo was a great idea, and how could one not miss living in NC? This is a extreme twisty road going down the mountain outside Wilkesboro

Oh at one point of my trips i wanted to test the governments elevation accuracy

As I suspected, government is WRONG J, GPS says 5400 feet, with 12 foot error margin

What a place to have lived. This is outside Hickory NC

I missed the taste of the NC spring water and just walking over and grabbing a handful... and its COLD water!

More water

GSP can get me home, but planning routes required a map

Alone with the bike between Jefferson and Wilkesboro

Before heading back to town and trailering the bike for FL

Looks like a fun trip. Atleast you and the 14 had one more good run before you went with the R1. Good pic taking skills by the way.

Deal's Gap Pics..
Steve:
Great Pics and roads. Reminds me of Western Maryland and PA as well. Nothing like twisty roads and no traffic. Glad the cops and leaves didn't get you. You totally get the back road thing.
Ride Safe...

The grant money dried up [no more stormtroppers] and the tourons stay away when the temps start to drop. Finally we can play in our back yard again.

Those pictures made me seriously homesick. I was born and raised in Darien, CT, and those Autumn colors and beautiful winding roads really brings me back. Great pics Steve!

Your confidence in the GPS is a little misguided. Vertical Survey Control (Elevation) is much harder to discern than horizontal control (Easting and Northing), as it needs more satellites sending time signals at optimum azimuths. Very rarely do GPS receivers ever give a reading closer to the actual elevation than 12 feet. Usually you would need to lay your GPS on the ground and leave it there for at least an hour, averaging at least ten spot readings, and even then I would not trust it. I am sure that the established elevation of 5377 feet is much closer to its exact elevation than a ZX-14 mounted GPS giving a spot elevation of 5400. The State sign is probably an approximation of an exact first order survey monument, triangulated from several known points.
Usually you guys on this forum teach me things about our ZX-14's that I could never imagine on my own. But for once, you have struck on something in my area of expertise.
I live in East Tennessee and have avoided Deal's Gap due to the Governor's publicized expenditure of our tax dollars giving overtime pay to the State Police. Additionally, I only go there when my tires are about ready to change due to the extreme wear those curves put on them. But your pictures leave me missing the place and the other bikes....As such, I will now try to ride there Sunday Afternoon, with or without my girlfriend.

Hi LawyerA, welcome to the forum I see you put up two posts
OK OK OK i suspected gps at a perfect 5400 number was off I was just joking around. But I suspected a good geocacher type (spelling) would set me straight man, thanks!
Ride the place if you have a chance it was great, as was the other areas of NC I used to live in the pics. I used to live near deal's gap sorta' and my friends and I never went because we had plenty of twisties. I realize now I was missing out (as GUNNER and the locals I met and rode with pointed out I would see)

Pics keep coming to me in e-mail from friends on the trip, but here is a ZX14 pic I wanted to post because it shows the pretty underside of the bike!
Had I been wearing proper gear/knee pucks, a whole lot more of the underside would've been showing

Great pics !! I live in NC and love riding here
I like the areas around Robbinsville, with the Cherohala Skyway
and the Foothills Parkway being my favorites.
<--- This pic taken on The Cherohala
Good to hear it was a safe trip for you and there were no problems
with our lovely troopers or the Blount County Sheriff's Deot ..LOL

mwrzx12 thanks for the kind words about the pics! I was surprised no trooper problems after all the Internet negativity regarding the law on the Dragon/Parkway/etc
I'm jealous you still live in NC and I don't, but I just got home from riding and I bet tonight its a little chilly up there
But next summer I wanna' try to escape the brutal heat here in FL and work from home up there!

Steve ..it never gets too cold to ride here ...
I just came back in from a ride, it is 45 degrees right now not too bad...
I may go ahead and put the liner in the Speedmaster jacket though.
Probably just a little cooler than Florida ..LOL
