new pet choice
This is off subject, but I wanted to ask anyways. About 2 months ago my dog (Gizmo) of 9 years had to be put to sleep. He had cancer. I said I wasn't gonna get another dog for a while, but now I've decided to get one. Gizmo was 3/4 Rottweiler and 1/4 German Sheppard. I'm wanting another big dog and I've decided on a Pit-Bull. Several friends at my work have pits and they love them. I was wondering how many of you guys have pits and how do you like them? I've already found one that I might get. She's 3 years old, black with a white chest.

BB76, Caution!!! If you have small children. Used (Adult) Pitts when brought into a new home, especially with kids has been proven to be a recipe for disaster. I myself would not own a pitbull, unless I raised it from a pup and with a pretty good history on the care that was given to the pup's parents. Fact is, some people have used these animals for fighting, feeding them small amounts of gunpowder along with steroids to make them extra strong & extra mean. Check the dog books or the internet and look into a Staffordshire Terrier. Great animals, with a very good temperament. Looks kinda like a pitt but taller and with a slightly longer snout. A cross between a pitt and a shepard if you will. Even has the mole on the cheek like a shepard. They are usally light brown or tan with a little bit of white on the chest and paws. Beautiful animals... And my next dog, if I ever own another one. Hope this helps.

Agreed, I'd only purchase one if it was a puppy and I would be raising it.

Very good advice above, Pits are great dogs IF......you know a DOGS TEMPERMENT and HOW THEY THINK. Use CAUTION about a grown dog, more so around a adult pit with an unknown history around kids !!!

I agree with the posts above... Dogs typically stick with the 'pack' mentality. They follow the 'survival of the fittest'. When raised as a puppy, they know who is boss. When they come into the family late, they may take a chance at moving up 'the chain'. I have a German Wirehair and when he is out in the area, if he smells a pheasant he will point it. It is in the breed... it is what is natural for him. Pit Bulls have a line that was bred to fight and fight until the end. It is not all pit bulls... but why take the risk? That being said, I have several people that are pretty good friends that have pits... and they have not had a problem. Like others have said on here, you typically don't hear of any problems from a Retriever etc... go with the safest choice... and when it comes to kids... if you have to ask the questions... then you may have just answered your own. Good Luck...

When it comes down to getting a dog why go out and get a grown dog of any breed if you have kids in the home. You are just taking on the last person problems. You will never know what that dog is going through when you are not around. mess around and bring home a monster. Just to let you know dont be tricked. you said you wanted a big dog and the American Pitbull Terriers are not big dogs. the pit avg. around 25 to 45 if lucky maybe 50lbs. people classify staffordshire terriers as pitbulls which vary in size and can get as big as 75 to 90lbs and vary in color. and i know they are not a cross between the shepard and pitbull. One more thing and i will leave it alone. The fact that they were bred to fight (The American Pitbull Terrier) is what make them great with kid. they were breed to be able to take alot of punishment and stay with it. and we know a child can dish out some punishment on a dog. breed to never turn an evil eye towards man. thats why if you want a guard dog get a guard dog if you want a good family pet but a man that can hold his own if he has too get a pit. but whatever kind of dog you get you have online go to AKC, and ADBA website etc.. and do your research so you can see if your ready for the type of dog your goning to be bring in you home.

Whoa, lotta feedback here! Thanks guys. I do know the history of this pit. She was raised by a family with a 4 year old son until she was 1 yr. old. Then was given to my friend because the family was moving to where they couldn't have a dog. My friend has had the dog for 2-3 years now and she has never shown any sign of aggression around people, just a few dogs, which is typical I think. I've been around the pit some and she seems to have taken a liking to me. I'm single with no kids, so I don't think I'll have a problem. She's on the big side for a pit, about 110 lbs, I believe is what my friend told me. I walked her around the yard and she was a handful to hold back. I've never seen so many muscles pop up on a dog like I did on her when she was pullin me around! It's gonna be a couple more weeks before I bring her home. I'm gonna keep goin to my friends house and spend time with the pit to get her used to me more. I'll post a pic in a little bit of her.

sorry man i thought for some reason you had kids. since you dont she might make a good pet for you. as far as her being a real American Pitbull she has staff in her she is too big for a pit but she still is beautiful. thats why they crossed the pitbull with staff to add some size and look to them. yes animal aggression is typical because thats what they were breed for. just because i say she has some staff in her if not all staff is not a bad thing because back in the days when the wrong people starting to get into pits, alot of people registered their pits as staffs to keep johny law at bay. so its still some pit left in her. if you had her paperwork i could show you where her bloodline strayed away from The American Pitbull Terrier. staffs are good dogs its just pits get blamed for everything just because there are alot of pretenders out there (look a likes) and pitbull sell head lines if you notice on the news if its a gemanshepard or any other dog attack the headline reads dog attack. but if it remotely looks like a pitbull the headline reads pitbull attack with a snarling pit in the background for the headline pic. thats why i hate when people say that their staff or dogo or presa is a pit. anyway hope she makes a great pet. good luck holla.

I bred Pits for 15 years, went by the Kennel name Raging Bull Kennels of NY. Never had a people aggressive Pit that was raised by me. Though, I had some that I acquired as older dogs that were quite a hand full. If you've been around the dog & she's OK (friendly). you'll probably be fine. Pits aren't naturally people aggressive or instinctively protective. They're usually made to be aggressive by irresponsible owners. Hell, I had to get an American Bulldog to keep the thieves from stealing my Pits.

Hmm, didn't know that either. Yeah, she is big so she might not be full blooded pit. I don't know if she has the papers on her. It don't really matter to me if she's full blooded or not. She's real friendly and a beautiful dog. Thanks for all the info!

There are plenty of large (+100lb) pure bred pits. She sure looks like shes purebred. The smaller ones are from game bred lineage (fighting dogs). Game bred Pits are usually extremely people friendly, just don't introduce them to your neighbors poodle! It won't be pretty.

ha that is so true i had to get rottweilers for my yard. are you still in the dogs i think i have heard of you guys. just for the record what was the largest American Pitbull Terrier you owned. not just your pit because we know plenty of dogs fall under the title of pitbull.
