I would unscrew the bolt just a bit and let a little drain out. Then tighten it again and wipe the area clean.

For now on though, ALWAYS watch it as you're filling it. Once I hit the 3rd bottle I start paying attention to the window as I'm filling.

it takes 4 quarts with the filter change. tad over 3 1/2 w/o filter change. Wish the manufacturers would put that info on the oil fill plug. just put it into the mold - would cost them nothing.

I see no one answered your question of wether it hurts performance having it at the upper edge of the sightglass. In most cages? No question it hurts power. Most import engines lose 5-10% of there "claimed" power when you put the proper amount of oil in them, because they run them 1-2 quarts low for there "official dyno runs". Crank windage or "ropeing" is the culprit. I dont know if the gears or crank on a 14 is able to grap enough oil to show on a dyno but I'm betting it does. Would explain the large gains from just changing to a zero or 5 weight oil. Lighter oil flings off quicker, less drag and less reciprocating weight to accellerate.

Fill your oil level to the point of where it is right in the middle or right between the bottom line and the top line. That is the proper level. Putting in too much oil will cause some of the oil to go through the blow by tube and up into your airbox, which then the oil will drain back out of the airbox and down through a tube running along the left side of the engine and down underneath. This tube has a black cap on the end of it, which you can simply pull the cap off and let the excess oil out. Make sure you have something to catch the oil with, else it'll come out on the ground. If you have the oil filled up to the top line, that is too much oil. Just drain some out and watch the glass as you do so.
