Installing a teather switch

I'm looking for some help installing a teather swithc that I will need to make passes at the drag strip. I tried (unsuccessfully) to install one on my 636 and would like to get it right this time. For those who have, is the necessary switch a normally open or normally closed? Also which wire did you splice into. On my 636 I tried using the lead to the handlebar swich but the the bike keeps running with the teather removed from the swich. According to my multi meter only 6 volts is traveling through this wire and can only conclude that the switch needs 12 volts to switch. Any advice from those that have installed teathers on their 14's would be great.

Right handle bar .... the one with the kill switch ....Follow the wires down to the plug for that switch .... Cut and splice into the red with silver tracer....

Thank you, just the info I was looking for. Slick switch housings by the way. A question about the toggle brackets, can you get the bracket with a 3 way switch instead of a 2 way?
