If the 14 is your first bike ever, do yourself a big favor. Do not make any mods that will increase power on your bike. This bike is actually quite ridable bone stock & I would've been comfortable letting my wife or girlfriend ride it. But, with a few simple mods you can turn your 14 into a violent beast that WILL get you into trouble real fast!!!! Throw some slip-ons on if you need some sound but, leave it alone till next summer & take a MC safety course to learn the basics.

Just be safe, don't get over your head. It happens before you know it. I've been riding for 30+ years and I'm still learning. Be aware of the other guys out there too!

Welcome tyler_weeks,

You requested info for tips regarding the pimping of your 14, not tips on how to ride or increase horsepower. Roaring Toyz, they are king of bling. They pimped 2 different ZX14s for Kawasaki before the bike was even on sale here in the states.

So in keeping the thread on your topic - One of the sponsors of our site is known for their pimp-parts nationwide. You can call them during business hours, but its best to check their web page.

Sure guys, encourage him to 240 tire it, lower it, and hell, might as well turbocharge it. He can learn to ride later......... COME ON!! Tyler you're in way over your head with a 14 as a starter bike, we rail all the time around here on guys buying too much bike too quick. I don't want to dog you, it's just a fact that in the next 6 months odds play out as: 40% chance you wreck it, and regardless of what is said it will be because of your inexperience: 30% chance you scare yourself so bad you sell it or park it in your garage and just talk about owning it. ( in California 35% of homes have a current licensed street bike, while less than 20% admit to riding ANY motorcycle regularly): 30% chance you just scrape by the initial months and learn your skills to stay alive, learn enough of your bike (I hope) to be able to use it's power, handling, and brakes well enough to maneuver out of trouble on the streets. I won't even list the probability of your learning how to ride your bike really well in the handling department, because it unfortunately won't happen. Maybe maybe you can bump all those odds in your favor by taking a riding course at your local track AFTER you take the MSF beginner course. If you spend enough time at the track, used wisely, you just might prove me wrong. I'm not a hater, just a pessimist. Seen it happen SO MANY TIMES to new riders... At least I don't know you so I won't have to scrape you off the pavement after you hit the gas full throttle for the first time...

I think if he leaves the flies in for a while, he will be just fine learning to ride on the 14. I went from a 600 to this beast and I adapted pretty good. But I did ride for 3 years before doing this.

One can kill hisself on a 250/600 just as quick as a 1400. The stock flies-in 1400 is mild the 1st thousand miles or so. Its all in how one chooses to work the wrist.

Buying a smaller bike just to learn and sell in a short time can be avoided.

Plus I don't think he asked for anyone's opinion of how to learn to ride or which size bike.

Tyler enjoy your ZX14 and be careful. Good luck on blinging it.

if you think a zx14 is as good a starter bike as a ninja 250 you know nothing about riding a motorcycle.

The difference between a 250 and a 14 is quite immense.

Now...I learned on a CBR 1100 when I first started riding. I just respected the bike and did fine. Now...I will tell you that I learned alot more about riding when I bought my 600rr and my 250. The 250 is a great bike to hone your skills....there are things I learned by riding my 250 that I probably would have never learned on my 600rr or even the 14.

I always strongly encourage my new riders to start on a standard type seating position (ninja 250, 650, sv650, or any small sport twin) because it teaches them the dymanics of riding. Anyone can yank the throttle and go in a straight line....but that's not the only aspect of riding....not even the most important either.

I still ride my 250 even though I have 6 years under my riding belt. It's still fun, and I am even more daring on my 250 than I am on my 600rr or my 14....

He can ride the 14 as a first bike (that's why the butterflies are there) but he will just lose out on learning some of the key aspects of riding. If he does just plain street riding...he will be fine. If he wants to do canyons and track days....he needs to get a smaller bike.

OK, I can't just leave it at that. Couple rules of the biking road for you:
1. Ride where cars (cagers) can see you. Rule of thumb: if you feel uncomfortable riding in a certain part of your lane YOU SHOULD BE THERE. When you ride where you feel "safe" -like the left side of the fast lane- cars will not see you in there mirrors, all they 'see' is a nice car sized hole in traffic coming up that they can jump into. Same goes for single lane roads, ride where your highest threat is going to be: cars turning left out of side roads, parking lots, or coming from the other direction, left turning cars are killers and the #1 cause of car-on-motorcycle accidents.
2. Ride with an "aggressively defensive" attitude. Not too hot, don't piss people off, just drive a little faster than traffic, it both keeps cars off your ass (no car in existence can stop in time if he's tailgating and you apply both binders in a panic-if he even sees you at all) and enables you to decide whats around you, not the traffic. Car coming down the onramp? gun it to ensure you stay far enough ahead he wont run into you. Car pulling up to a stoplight ahead on your right? get into left lane just incase he pulls out. Never EVER assume a cager see's you. They can -and do- look straight thru you even if you thought you had 'eye contact'. Assume the worst and actively avoid it. It's alot to learn and take in for a rookie rider on a big bike but it gets easier. I sound like a friggin Safety Course Instructor don't I? Damn, old age (36 ) and 200K + miles onroad do that to you. In Cali. if you survive a year of riding that means you avoided a hundred possible accidents, had 20-30 near misses and just plain got lucky a few times. Friggin cager maniacs in California. Cut those numbers in half or quarter for most States.
Point is, there is no leeway on a bike, it's like going from college baseball to starting in the majors, with your career riding on your ability from the first minute there.
Once you get the hang of it it'll become second nature too you, a source of pride and individuality that has always defined a 'biker'. Which females can sense, BTW, which is why nearly ALL females, young or old, will straighten up a bit as they walk by you, and shoot you sideways looks and nervous smiles. Or it could be the bugs on your visor, hmmmm, lets call it a either/or situation. lol

I didn't compare one model to another, but I know a 14 isn't the worst bike to start on nor impossible to start on.

The man wasn't asking Internet opinions regarding what model bike to learn on, he wanted bling ideas and everyone seemed to get off-topic with B_S and such

we lost two 14 riders last month or so on howard franklin, both cases were related to excessive speed.

the first center punched the rear end of some old farts car coming over the hump at 160+, he flew over 300 feet before his corpse came to rest. excessive speed and limited forward view.

the second lost control riding with a buddy at 120+ and hit the guard rail. the bike stayed on the bridge but the crabs were feasting by the time they found him in the bay. excessive speed, not paying attention, fooling around.

you bought a great bike that is very stable, handles and stops well. for me it is the self control it takes to ride sanely. thats the you part. sticks mentioned some safety space, thats very important too, just ride like all cars are out to get you, stay away from them. have fun fixing up your bike and live to have as many posts as steve. i like it that the guys around here care..

bigdtd one of those riders on the bridge was on a red CBR according to the news pics, not sure if you meant to say "14" riders

its sad and we'd be hypocrites to say slam their speed as most of us have went "a few" MPH over that long bridge
