Sprocket changes for the ZX-14
Don't have a 14 but a couple of buddies do. Getting into 1/8 and 1/4 mile drag runs. Why is it that no one mentions about going up on the rear sprockets. Everyone talks about dropping in the front only. I was told long ago that going up in the rear 3 is like going down one in the front. going up in the rear allows for less chance of binding on the front sprocket as the chain tries to turn the tight curve in the front when it has been reduced in sprocket count. What say you????
PS- one of my first bikes was a ZX-6E that was down one in front and up three in rear. Could jump a ZX-11 in 1/8 but of course was swallowed up in the 1/4.

I agree with you, School. The reason most people that I know usually go down in the front instead of just in the rear alone is because they usually don't want everyone to know how their bikes are geared. (You know the whole saying, "I'm stock") when they really are not. In the front any gearing that you have, whether one down or one up or whatever, is hidden by the stator cover. Whatever gear you have in the rear is in plain view. Another reason for the front sprocket change for some is that a front sprocket is 2 to 3 times cheaper than a rear one. Hope that helps ya.

thanks fastest, understand for street racing, but when these guys show up at the track stretched, lowered, airshifters sticking out, some even with nitrous, what difference does it make? I agree about the "stock" though. Its amazing what they'll say when your looking right at their bike that has been tricked out! Steve, I 'm a drag dummy, what is VORTEX???

Going smaller on the front sprocket by one tooth does change the ratio.... but it does not 'act' like going up two in the back. Think of a 10 speed bike. You can change the front and the back ratios. 6th gear feels easier to pedal than 5th does... even though you have more gear. (Showing my age vecause I think everything is at least a 15 speed now??!!) Going up two teeth in the back will be more prone to wheelie due to the physics. When you go down one in the front, it offers the 'ratio' of going up in the back, but the power delivery is different. Also, on the sprockets that are on these bikes stock, you will not have a problem with the chain binding if you go down just one tooth in the front. If you do both, then you will gain a lot of low end power, and have to fight the wheelies. Now I will admit that I am going from my experience in the 80's and can't be positive that it is still exactly the same... but judging by the people who drag race, they all go down a bit on the front... so I can only imagine that it is the same principle on the new bikes. Going smaller in the front will wear a chain out faster than going bigger in the back. Just my 2 cents... I would like to hear from the drag racers though....

on our road race track bikes we change the front and the back sprockets. the desired tooth count/ratio depends on the characteristics of the specific track we are racing. we do the 520 size chain and sprockets to shed weight too
Oh, and did I mention VORTEX :P

The other point worth making here is that by going up a few teeth on the rear chainwheel the wheelbase is shortened and you will have to purchase a new chain too. Not neccessary if you keep the standard 41 tooth item and go down to a 16 tooth gearbox sprocket.

Wrong - Naw I don't have an financial interest in VORTEX, I'm just a customer of them and use their parts on my race bike. Sorry if it sounds like spam or a commercial. I'm particular about VORTEX and MICHELIN on my bikes. Fack all the lesser products :P

THE REASON IS the front cost less....... and you will not need to replace chain like going 6 up on back to dropping 2 down on front
