Learn to ride.....

Ace402:

Many others have chimed in so I will try to be brief. The fact that you have found our forum and posed the question of a 14 for a 1st bike suggests that you have a clue even if you are perhaps naive about the danger.

1. The insurance cost for you as a teenager on a 14 assuming you want/need coverage where you live will be........$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

2. Learn on a small CC bike. Take MSF courses and wear a helmet.....always. When your learning, often you don't know what you don't know until your in the situation. Big power puts you in those "situations" in the blink of an eye. Not a place to be developing/exposing.... your skills.

3. Practice, practice, practice. Dirt trails, parking lots, private property, all good places to learn how to control the bike, how the controls work and gain experience.

Lastly save your money for "proper" riding gear B4 you get whatever bike you decide on. At a minimum, a good helmets jacket and gloves. One day down the line having that gear and wearing it......always will add time to your existence here.....trust me on that one.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Ride Safe.....

By the way, that "I'LL BE CAREFUL" mess went out the window in a month when I was running my Puke Green 69' Dodge Dart on the Interstate at a speedo indicated 120 mph.

We've All been 16. Don't lie to yourself.

Oh, and those "SCARY STORIES" just so happen to be true.

A guy died the other night in my town riding an 07' R1 that got away from him. A couple of weeks before he bought it, he was arguing with his father saying he was getting an R1 because he didn't think he could handle a Busa'. His father knew him all too well and told him to get something smaller, and don't try to impress the fellas.

Well, when they found what was left of him and his "NOT SO POWERFUL" R1, you could fit both he and the bike in a trash bag. One trash bag.

Did I mention that it was his first bike?

nah its gona be in my dads name, well im gona get my permit and try out the msf course and depending on how comfortable i feel riding whatever motorcycle they let me ride on ill decide what i want. im either gona get a zzr 600 or a zx14. i rode a jetski for the first time in my life yesterday and it was tough goen 45 mph cuz u really had to hang on to the handlebars so u wouldnt fly off and my arms are still sore from it. but i think i could easily adapt to something like that if i rode it everyday. like if i bought the zx14 i could get used to its power through riding it everyday. ill just have to see how scary it is riding a slower bike first in the msf course.
more then likely if you are using the supplied bike it will be something totally different then a current sportbike. i see you mentioned zzr 600. Much better choice. Don't take the negativity to heart, these guys have been there done that with regards to motorcycles. They are just trying to look out for you.

i got my first bike at age 16, it was a red 1976 125 honda elsinore motocross bike. told mom it was for trail riding. one day she came out to where we were riding and she almost had a heart attack. we were doing jumps, bermshots, and hauling ass. at least in the dirt i had a chance to learn how to bust my ass. you will bust your ass, its not if, its when. do not learn to ride a motorcycle on the street. you need to learn the basics like leaning, sliding, balance and moving around on the bike. that bike was a 125 and it would flip you over in at least the first three gears. if you have to get a bike for the street get an enduro type(motard?) with tires to match the surface you ride most on(street or off road). learn the bike, the rules of the road, and have fun. you will be able to learn manuevering easier on a bike with more suspension and wide bars. ANY of todays street sport bikes(600s included) have such extreme performance that it is certain death for the inexperienced rider. please listen to the folks here and be patient. i'm 47 now i have had around 10 bikes since then and the 14 is a beast. i still can't believe how quick you can be over your head. we want you to be a biker for a long time learn to ride slowly. last thought, they don't train you to fly in an f-16, they train in a cessna hmmmmm.

Hey.... ace 402

All the the people here have your best interst at heart. PLEASE... listen to them.
I am 47 I have been riding and racing since I was 13. 1st bike... a Suzuki Tc 125
2nd bike a Honda 360
3rd a Honda Cb750, this bike made 69hp and did maybe 120 mph tops 1/4mi 13.6 @ 108 mph.

A 5-10 year old 600cc bike would kick that 750's ass..

Please slow down and learn to ride... the right way.

NO FIRST RIDER OF ANY AGE IS READY FOR WHAT THE ZX14 CAN DO..

They can ride one for sure, but one second of bad decision making and it is a crash or worse. At the speeds that a 14 or for that matter a 600 can produce..... lights out my friend

Riding is the best thing that I have ever done and learn to master in my life.. Most of my long term friends are riders...... some of them have died.

Really riding a slower bike in the course will not give you a feel for riding a 14. The course bikes are bicycles with lawnmower motors. I disagree with the rest of the panel who tell you that you should start off on a 500 or 600, because every person I taught to ride (most of which are women) quickly tire of those bikes within a month or two and are making payments on something they already want to upgrade. I suggest you start on a 750 Gixxer. Ultimately, you are an energetic youth, and you will end-up getting what you want regardless of what a bunch of faceless old farts tell you what to do, but you did ask our opinion and through experience I am certain each of us can tell you a story of the newbie launching their new ride out from underneath them. Good luck!

I gave up reading all the posts half way through.....

Dude!
We would like to hear from you next year, and every year following.
You seem like a well mannered respectable person... a dwindling example these days.
Stay alive bro.

Please... stay away from the 14 for a while!
It is far too much machine for a beginner.

I won't tell you to buy a ninja 250 because :
1) its too slow for the interstate
2) Anyone with any mechanical inclination or riding ability will outgrow it very quickly
3) you wouldn't listen anyway.

So my best advice, and the smartest thing I read from your posts yet...

The zzr600 would be a perfect 1st bike if you have some training and dirt bike background.

I remember the level of self control I had when I was 16 years old. next to NONE!
I would have rode the 14 until it scared me or until it killed me.

I guarantee no matter which bike, you WILL be exhilirated, enthralled, and in love with riding.
The difference being you will actually feel in more control of the 600.
You will feel like you are riding it , rather than it riding you.
The 600 will serve a perfect learning tool, and escape away from all things that you need relief.

I have ridden for 30 years now, 10 on dirt before any pavement.
I started out on a YZ80, and grew to 125, 250 then CR500's.
I have owned the new YZ450's as well.

I could never imagine going directly to the CR500.
Hell they don't even make them anymore, there is no class to race them in, and they were way too much bike even for pro's to race. Lap times were faster on the 250's than the 500's for most anyway.
zx14 (500lbs 170RWHP)+ pavement = CR500 (220lbs 60RWHP) + dirt

My objective here is to impress how important it is to become good before you become fast, and that fast bikes don't make good riders.
Slow bikes make good riders, they just learn to become good then they become fast!

Ricky Carmical, James Stewart, Jeremy McGrath, Travis Pastrana, Nicky Hayden, Roger Hayden, Eddie Lawson, and the list goes on...
They all learned on dirt, on mini bikes making 5 -10 RWHP. from very early ages.
These are men who were born with a gift, and developed their talent.
I doubt a single person on this website can claim their accolades, so I would bet against you being born with more skils either.

Start small, get good, then get fast.
It takes years my friend, not days, or a single summer.
No point having the fastest bike making 170 RWHP if you can't ride it fast, because you have not learned the skills to ride it well enough to enjoy its potential without hurting yourself.

You will have to experince the edge of tire adhesion to KNOW what it feels like.
The first time few times you experience it you will fall down.
Would you really wan to wreck your shiny new 14?.... Thought not.

A dirt bike is the single best place to learn.
Tree's don't move and the traction is poor, and dirt usually hurts less when you hit it.

Otherwise... if you have the space to ride one, a 600 with stunt bars, and boots, gloves, helmet and full leathers would be ideal.

I say stunt bars.... not for stunting, but because frame sliders will not save your bike if it is moving, frame sliders will not.

BE SMART, RIDE SAFE, MASTER THE MACHINE AND STAY ALIVE LITTLE BROTHER!
Your obviously a good young man... don't waste it!

We want to hear from you, drop in once in a while and keep us updated.
Good luck.

I learned on a ZX-9 and must say that it was many times that I came close to killing myself. Basically everyone that I rode wit had Them. Mine was a 98' Most had 00'. Knowing the power that these bike have, I would say start with a 600 or atleast nothing bigger than a 750. Oh and I was 18 and wrecked it in 7months. Hit a car broadside at no less than a 100MPH and flew 40 yards. Luckily I live in the country and was flung onto the grass.

Everyone of the guys I rode with has gone down at one point or another. At 16 learn on something you can really control. A Good 600, besides the newer 600s are making good power and can be very quick.

I just remember like many of the guys here have already said. At 18 I did care much about getting hurt and pushed the limits A LOT. I'm sure you will do the same. Matta Fact I will bet on it. Wanting to impress people at that age is almost like breathing air.

One last note......My best friend will be rolling into my wedding in a wheel chair because of an accident on a bike. Another guy I know who was 37 died about a2 months ago on a Busa and he had been racing many powerful mustangs for years but was not able to take a good lick on his bike....and that was his second time going down in a year. Rest in Peace

Tell you what baby boy, I'm going to try and make this fast, everyone has made great points on here. Look i'm 23, thats not a vet by any means at all, but i know where your coming from. I got to the street from a very VERY big dirt background (good place to start) as many riders do. When it came time for my fist street bike, age 21!!!!!, i could only think about getting the badest things on the road. I was looking a the Busa (ruled out easy because its so ugly) and every lighterbike i could find. I ended up with a r1, I said the same thing a you. "i'll take it slow" yea right. ANYWAY, it turns out that i would ride with lots of 600cc and 750s, and i couldnt do anything they couldnt d, unless it was something really stupid, like going over 140mph, thats the only time you will really see a gap with a 600cc and 1000cc. Truth is the 600cc are lighter, handle better, get better gas, and are all around cheaper. After seeing that i NEVER use more then 65% of the bike i was ready to get on a 750 but it got stolen. Now i live in the country so i'm waiting for the '08 14, but i really dont need to be on it myself, and as a first bike way bad idea. Oh yea! i DID drop my bike first year, low speed turn. Going slow means nothing on a bike, like how about the fact the around 70% of stopping comes from the front break, so what do you do when you need to spot and there gravel on the road...yea..things you learn. How about this is a common one, you hit a unexpected bump and open up the throttle...zx14...dead. I'm scared as crap what that bike can do but my back cant take the 600 and 1000 for the type of riding i do now. Being on any bike is a great experience, just because its the fastest doesnt mean its the best for you. ALL in all its your money and life, but idk about you but i hate losing both of those things. Good luck baby boy.

i know what u mean, idk what im gona do. when i wanted to get a bike i looked at all of them and really fell in love with zx14. i dont see what could go wrong really if i take it slow. i know u think i will kill myself but im not really like other teenagers who speed alot. i go 60 or 70 in my car and sumtimes ill go 90 up this one hill cuz theres no cops but thats cuz im in a car and i know if i crash i will be safe or at least have a good chance of survival. but on a bike nuh uh. my mind is nowhere near the point where i wana go fast on a bike. i can feel when im losing control of something and i would slow down or would even stop and take a break if i felt uncomfortable. i never go to a certain limit that i know i cant handle. i basically taught myself how to drive, play the guitar, fly a plane, and i taught myself those things in very little time. im a person who can do that. i know i will easily adapt to riding a motorcycle and its power im just like that. hey i know i may crash once in a while or fall down if i make a bad mistake but i doubt i would ever make a mistake so great it would cost me my life. im smarter then that to drive at a speed i know i cant handle. i dont see myself as a crazy teenager, im pretty relaxed, and chill. more like a mature adult. like i said id practice on my road, even if it takes months until im comfortable enough to take it on the highway. im really trying to persaude u into saying yauh if u do what u say u will be alright, but i know u scared to say that cuz u saying that could cost me my life. but like i said b4 i dont have time to buy bikes and move up. i only got a year to ride this bike so its now or never ya know. wish u would understand and say its ok but i know u never will. thanks for caring though

Ok, do what you want. FOr some reason, I feel that your actually not 16 and just possing as a 16 yr old to stir some responses.

Besides, whos dumb as father would by their 16 yr old a ZX-14 as a first bike.

If this is actually a true post, and your dad is letting you pick this bike to buy.....What all due respect, HE IS AN ASSHOLE!!!!!

I had to raise my own money and buy behind my parents back. And even then they were pissed. My dad told me 2 wks before my accident that I would not stop that bike if someone pulled in front of me because of how I rode.....AND HE WAS Right.

If you won't go 90 in acar then you definitely have no need for a 14 or a 600 just get a 250.

Personally I have come to the conclusion that this post is BULLSHYT!!!!!
