Ground clearance
Does stiffening up the preload slightly increase ground clearance. I want to run the prostar race this weekend, but I need 3 inches and don't quite have it. Thanks.

You can get there that way but stiffening the shock can also change the way the bike is launching now. If the bike is working well as is I'd just raise the rear with some adjustable links.
What class you coming out to race in?

I could definitely use some more preload. I'm 290 in leathers and it's still on the stock setting! I'm hoping by stiffening it up I can get the required ground clearance and a better launch.
I rarely spin on the launch. It's usually a wheelie, so by stiffening it up, the front end should stay down better, right? assuming I don't go too stiff, to the point where it will spin the tire.
If I race it will just be street et. I'm too heavy to compete in a heads up class. You going to be there?

The preload setting controls where the shock rides in the stroke. The lesser the amount, the higher it rides etc... I have no idea what a good sag numer for drag racing is, but for road racing it'd be 25-30mm. If it's squatting on lauch, try adding compression damping. This is once you get your sag set, obviously.

Yep, I'll be there. At 290 you should go ahead & crank the preload down several turns and turn in the compression screw all the way to the right (top of shock) and rebound all the way left.

I just tightened the preload 1 turn and if there was a little difference in how stiff it felt, but no measurable increase in ride height, how much can you tighten it and not end up binding the coil too much.
chunter, what class are you running, or are you watching?
