Gearing

Got to make this quick. My name is Pat Dietrich and I just became a trader. Let the Busa go and decided to go back to A Kaw and see what I can do with one of these. Got about 130 miles on it. Had it since this last Friday. Some of you may have seen my busa and know me from other sites. My Busa was a beautiful machine and when its all said and donem so will this bike. Not that it isn't real nice already, just needs some touch ups here and there. My question is on gearing. I want a vortex 43 rear but there is some sort of problem and won't be able to get one till the end of june believe it or not. But there are a few 42s available. Now i will be running a 190-50 shinko ultra soft on the rear. Would rather change the back rather than going a 16 up front. My question: ( finally, lol) What, at redline would 4th gear pull to with a 43 rear and a 42 rear? I want to be geared to run 153-154 at redline in 4th. So an exact number would be greatly appreciated.

By the way, nice to be on board!!

17/43 gearing, I go thru the traps 4th gear shift light just coming on 50ft before =144mph
Shift light set @ 10600 (which is actually 10K) I'm 245lbs suited 1.50 60ft
Pipe no PC3 flies still in

Hope that helps?

Pat,

When I calculate my ratios I take the engine rev limiter to be 10800rpm.

In 4th that would give 151mph with a 43 and 155mph with a 42 using a standard Bridgestone rear. I guess a Shinko would be about the same circumference.

Welcome Pat ... I use 16 /41 but i'm only 150 pounds ... My trap speeds range from 153 to as high as 158 but avg 155 MPH ... I tried a 43 rear and at 64 inches i could not keep the front end down ...I'm adding a longer swing arm and may have to try that 43 tooth again..

Don't worry most of us were Busa owners also ... Smokin...

I'm just guessing to have everything on after next weekend. The pipe could be the hold up. Give me a week to get used to it and put a few more miles on it and maybe towards the end of june I'll give it a shot.

So what you are saying is our tachs are 600 rpm off?? So , I'd have 800 rpm to go? Our redline is 10,800. For some reason i was thinking it was 11,000. Have to look at the tack again. Thanks for the reply!

True on the heavier tire but a tire that hooks as oposed to a tire that won't will win every time!

Speaking of which, whats the stock tire like with a 4 over arm on a strip?? Thinking its coming right off and I'll just sell it for a good price and get a shinko.

Thanks for the compliment. But better hang on to your money till i prove myself on this one.

But i'm guessing you're shifting into 5th with that gearing? What are you running on the back, guessing an ultrasoft?

Yup a Shinko 190 U soft ... Seems to work.... I ran the Battlax at stock wheel base and it worked great ( 9.18 @ 153 ) I tried it at 62 1/2 and it worked good also BUT we have a real good track that hooks ...I changed to the Shinko when i went to 64 inches.. I just made the bike 67 inches and i hope the Shinko still works because the MT shoot out tires are just to much money and wear to fast for me ..
Im in 5th at about 9k at the line , it think i may try a 43 on the rear and see if i can get closer to red line..... I shift mine at 11,300 right before the REV limiter at 11,400 and my Gauge seems to be right on the money in the upper gears ...In first and second it seems the Gauge is a little slow to keep up with what the engine is really doing ... I just think it doesn't have time to get caught up with this fast reving engine... But down track in 3,4,5 it does have the time and reads right on the money.. Shifting right before the 11,400 limiter is one of the biggest things you can do to go fast on this bike ....I should add that only works if you have a good pipe and map.. Stock there is no reason to go that high because the power is falling off fast after 9500.. Smokin...

So the redline is 11,400?? Better go look at my bike. If thats the case a 43 should be about perfect which by the way i got a call yesterday from Spencercycle and he found one for me. I know on the busa i could hit 161 before the limiter came on which was 11,400. Thats with 17-41 gearing.

Smokin' - didn't seem like you lost any mph then from going with the stock tire to the shinko. I used to run Pirelli tires and those were super lite. Liked them but not enough patch on the ground for not so good tracks.

Cajun- Got the black. Eventually it'll get painted Candy Brandywine. Trying to look at your seat but your picture is too small. Can you put up a bigger one or maybe you have one up. If so get me a link please. Just sent mine to Tobin ( Pa Freak) to get cut down. Hate sitting on top of bikes, like to feel like i'm in them!

Redline on the gauge is at 11,000 but the rev limiter kicks in at 11,400 .....

Which would be 10,800 if it was off by 600rpm

Check this out, Shnitz has a video that shows the tach off by 6%

Hubble??? As in Ben? Thanks for the props bud. I thought I'd keep my Busa forever, but it does seem when someone offers enough money, your not quite as attached as you once thought. HAHA.

SO what are you riding??

Mustang was sold to Charlie back in 97' . Have no idea where it went from there. Also something else i thought i'd keep. Loved that car.

Thank you! Why is it that when i use the search, it comes up with a whole lot of things not related to what i wanted searched out? For instance, Airshifter wiring. Nothing.

That is actually a common misconception the search function only works for people who have 26000 post of silly and humurous pictures hence the only person that can successfully use the search function is STEVE LOL what is If I was at home on my computer I would send you that gear calculator but I am in Philadelphia for a few more days, Maybe Steve can find it Or actually Smokin may have it
