cooling upgrades
I'm needing to upgrade my cooling on my 14. I don't like it when it get's close to the H mark in slow moving traffic. I know about the Muzzy aluminum fan and using water wetter, but is there anything else? Maybe a lower temp thermostat, anyone make those?

I wired my hazards switch to the fan so I can turn it on when stuck in traffic.
Works great, use it all the time, I think i use to use the hazards. . . . never!

If thermostat is working a new one wont make any difference, by the time the bike warms up the thermostat is wide open and providing max flow. Cooler thermo just means it opens quicker and doesnt have any affect on max temp......TB

Yeah, I have a switch already wired to the fan. I tied into the horn hot wire. Well, how about a higher flow thermostat? That would work, right?

just because you are moving the water thru the radiator at a higher rate doesn't really mean that its cooling any better.

I rode mine all last summer through the extreme Florida heat and it was no biggie. Even idling for long periods.
FYI-
And the search feature will provide a plethora of info

Well, what about the temp gauge, do I just ignore it? It get's pretty close to the H mark when I'm stuck behind slow moving cars or in traffic. I know some of you guys said the 06 models had problems with the gauge being inaccurate, but kawi supposedly fixed this problem on the 07's. I just want to do what I can to take care of my bike.

One mark below H, no problem. Typical for me in slow traffic. Right on H, no problem. Hit it only once. Gauge is blinking, you're overheating. Pull over and cool it down. Never has happened to me. Best option, don't worry about it unless you see it blinking (I've heard it has happened to someone but its gotta be very rare). If you're totally serious then:
This has been said dozens of times by various 14 owners. To run cooler:
1. Replace the stock exhaust cans with either a full system or slip-ons to get rid of the heat retaining catalytic converters.
2. With the new exhaust, add a Power Commander properly maped to get rid of the lean f/a. Lean f/a makes the engine run hotter.
3. Get rid of the 50/50 ethylene glycol (green) coolant. Water is the best coolant but will corrode your engine and has no freeze protection. If you live in an area where it doesn't freeze there are high performance non-glycol coolants with anti-corrosion additives and seal conditioners. If you need some freeze protection, consider using Engine Ice. I'm running Engine Ice with Water Wetter. Engine Ice is not a miriacle cure. It helps a little bit but not much. Water Wetter will not reduce your steady state operating temperatures. I
does help the engine cool down quicker and heat up slower.
4. Get your new exhaust headers, collector, and mid-pipe ceramic coated inside and out.
Cost is variable but generally less than $200 depending on where you go. If you get the exhaust from Brock order it ceramic coated so, unlike me, you don't have to find a coater. The ceramic coating seems to make a significant difference. It keeps the surface temperature of the headers and collector much lower and therefore reduces the radiative heat load into the radiator and oil pan when your moving at slow speed.
5. Personally I'm not a believer in the Muzzy fan. I don't think it helps much. The really serious have installed another fan. Two fans is better than one. Changing the thermostat will have no impact on steady state operating temperature (unless your thermostat is not functioning properly).

Thanks raptor14. Mine has not hit the H mark yet, but it has been at the mark right below it. I'm gonna copy and print your reply and if I start running in the H mark, I'll definitely be doing something about it. Thanks again.

If you've only been one mark below H you have absolutely nothing to worry about. Your bike is normal. You might hit H on a hot day while idling in traffic. As I said, I hit H only once. It was a 100 degree day, I had just been thrashing the bike for 50 miles, when I came to a construction area where traffic was completely stopped. After idling for about 5 minutes it went all the way up to H but immediately dropped when the bike started moving again. The bike is not overheating unless the temp indicator starts blinking. That has never happened to me. You got plenty of margin one bar below H.

I HATE the bar. I wish it was a number so we could tell exactly what the temp of the coolant is. Even finer gradient lines would be better than the blocks we have. I was getting a little nervous the other day too in slow moving traffic, one bar below H.

I rode mine in over 100 degree temps in FL last summer daily with NO problem. Tampa traffic jams sitting still forever too.
