Fix everything for free!
I have had the '14 for 12 months now, and read all the good stuff on removing the second set of butterflies, putting in power commanders and the like. There is no doubt the second flies are a pain in the arse, severely reducing power under 6000 rpm, but there is also no doubt that removing them makes the bike less manageable.
I pulled them out and found the power delivery too abrupt, especially when riding through traffic. I commute daily to Melbourne (Australia) from around 40 Ks out and I cut things pretty close through the cars.
The answer! I screwed the flies together and using a belt sander, ground 3mm off each side. I screwed them together so they are all identical. Stock they have less than 1mm at the front and back, to let just a little air through when closed. Another 3mm left a visible gap on either side. I cleaned the flies up and screwed them back in. I also pulled the metal gauze off the air filter. This is the most stupid thing on the bike after the perpectually closed butterflies, it restricts the air flow dramatically.
The bike now goes like a cut snake, with a heap more low down grunt, no flat spots and completely controllable, though I have to watch it in the wet now, it will let go if I'm careless.
The last thing I did (for free) was dial the front fork pre-load up a notch and increased the rebound damping on the rear.
The bike was a bit twichy on corners especially going down hill, lifting the front a bit has made it perfect. Aussie roads are often bumpy, and the ZX has to put up with some rough stuff now and then, and it is handling much better now especially when I'm going for it.

We thought about that before, but nobody really did anything like this. Two such suggested mods last year about this time: 1) drill holes into the butterflies to allow some direct air through, but not the whole amount, and to save off/reshape the butterflies.
In the end, people found it easier to just relearn how to modulate the throttle. It doesn't take very long to relearn how to drive it, and ultimately less work and worry.
